Guest guest
I was wondering what kind of schooling you need, and what does it include? How long do you have to go to school? Any info would be great. I never used a LC, but I think even if the hospital had suggested one I would have. All they offered was a nurse, and when I need a LC, I called dh's aunt who nurse all 3 of her children. <3, Robin
Guest guest
Welcome ! I'm thinking that that's what I'd like to be when I grow up! lol took me long enough, I just turned 29 :-) I'm Michele, SAHM of 2 2/3, this one will also be our last. Were you able to go to school with your little ones? I'm expecting this one in March and I thought I'd have to wait until he is a big bigger to go to school. As for finding a LC, I've seen flyers at our OB's office and the health center where we get our kids vaccinated. The local midwives magazine has ads and our playgroup allows moms to post flyers. Our small community paper also has a section in the classifieds called " Your Children " or something like that, where the ads for daycare and childrens resale shops are, a LC would fit in there I think :-) We live in Edmonton btw, and you can see more about us at our homepage. I am a stay at home mom of three little ones. DJ is four yrs. old and I breastfed him for one yr., is 2.5 yrs. old and I breatfed him for fifteen months and is seven months old and I will probably breastfeed her until she graduates from college as she is my last baby. I am also a Lactation Consultant in my spare time. We have just moved to a small town about 1.5 hrs. from where we used to live and I am trying to start my business again. I would like to get as much input as possible from everybody here. How did you find the Lactation Consultants that you used? And if you didn't use one, where could I advertise myself so that you would know where to find me if you needed me? What would be a fair and affordable pricing structure? And any other advice you have would be greatly appreciated. Guest guest
Hi , welcome to the list. I got my LC through the ped office, she is also an RN. She charged me $65 for an initial consult + pumping equipment when I needed to rent a breastpump from her. jen >From: CLE1@... .. How did you find the Lactation Consultants that you used? Guest guest
Hi Michele and Robin- Thanks for your posts. I took a course through Evergreen Community Hospital in WA. They came out to CA to do a one week certification course for the hospital out here. I was able to attend because I had just gotten pregnant and just finished nursing my little one. I had alot of help from extended family with babysitting for the week but it all worked out. The course consisted of lecture, case studies and you were required to pass a final exam in order to become certified. After that I started teaching breastfeeding classes to women one on one and then I began consulting with women after they had their babies. I truly enjoy what I do and it is something that for the most part I am able to do around my husbands work schedule. If I can't meet someone and they are in dire need of help I usually refer them to another consultant near me. Someday I would like to become a board certified consultant, but this takes many many hours of experience before being able to sit for the exam. If you have a college degree it takes 2500 hours of experience and without the degree it takes something like 6000 hours of experience and education. So, as you know, being a stay at home mom I barely get an hour to myself much less 6000 for someone else. So maybe when my daughter graduates from school I will be with her as a board certified consultant. Until then I will continue helping moms and doing something I enjoy. Guest guest
Hi, I just wanted to thank everybody for their input. I decided to advertise myself with flyers at some of the local childrens shops, a breast pump rental station and I am trying to find out about playgroups I may be able to advertise with. In the area that I live there is only one ob/gyn office and they already have an LC. The hospital doesn't have a lactation program yet but one woman is trying to get one going so I am going to try to help her. So far the hospital has said that they will not fund it but maybe one of their foundations will. To bad that the hospital doesn't see this as a benefit. If all else fails then I think I will volunteer my services at the hospital right after women have their babies and then hopefully if they need someone afterwards they will think of me. As far as my rate structure goes, I have found out that in other areas surrounding me the going rate for an LC seems to be in the $50-$60 range. So I am going to charge $50/session. However, I want to be able to help anybody that needs it and I do not want money to be an issue. So I am going to tell women that if this is not affordable for them to let me know and they can pay me what they can afford. Once again, I thank you all for your support and quick answers. Everything that I decided to do I got from posts. I am very grateful. Good luck to everybody and if anyone ever needs any help please let me know. My email is CLE1@..., I look forward to helping anyone that needs it. Sincerely- Busch
Guest guest
Sounds like a good plan ! It's too bad insurance companies don't pay for LC's if they supported bfing, less babies would end up on formula and they would save a ton of $'s in health care issues. the book 'Milk, Money and Madness - the Culture and Politics of Breastfeeding' mentions a few com companies in the States that have hired LC's for their employees to help working moms and they provide pumping stations etc. and they've saved lots of money with healthier babies and moms not taking as much time off of work :-) Michele Re: Lactation Consulting Business? >From: CLE1@... > >Hi, I just wanted to thank everybody for their input.
