Guest guest
Hi Kristy. Thanks for replying. Do you also have the Group B strep in your urine? Mine was actually found in a urine culture. I cant take the pennicillin though to get rid of it. Do you also have alot of bladder/urethra pain as well?? I have awful vulva burning and now itching at times as well. I was told it was vulva vestibulitis, vulvadynia,LP you name it. I think that that Bacterial Vaginosis and the group B strep have something to do with all of it if you ask me. I am trying to learn of way to get rid of the B-strep and BV. I am taking the clindamycin cream for the BV, but now my bladder and urethra are severely flared up. I am looking into what natural products could possibly help with the Group B strep. Jen -- In VulvarDisorders , Kristy Sokoloski wrote: > > Jen, > > I know when I get Group B Strep. Guest guest
Hi , Yes, I've had B Strep show up in my urine before. And yes, I do get some pain in my urethra at times. Eventually I need to find out if I have IC b/c of one of my other medical problems. My having vulvodynia makes me very prone to infections such as Group B Strep. My vulvodynia can cause me to have burning as well such as sometimes if I eat too much of a certain something (which is where the issue of oxalates comes in to play for some ladies although the low oxalate diet doesn't work for everyone. This thing of the burning from something I eat too much of doesn't happen often so most of my burning comes from the vulvodynia itself. You won't be able to get rid of the B Strep. We naturally carry some B strep in us. It's when it becomes an overgrowth that can cause a problem which is why for most women the dr won't treat it until the woman who is pregnant and is in labor with her baby. The reason is b/c the Group B Strep can actually harm a baby if it's not treated before the baby comes out. As for the BV, when I get it I find that Metrogel works pretty well. I like it better than the Cleocin cream. Kristy ________________________________________________________________________________\ ____ We won't tell. Guest guest
Hi Kristy, As far as the metrogel, I cant take it due to an allergic reaction, so the clindamycin vaginal cream is the only thing so far that I am taking, and it has caused a huge flare in my bladder/urethra pain. I have to take it for 7 days and I have only had 4 doses so far, and I am ready to stop it. My gyne does not think that the cream is the cause for my IC flare, but I find it weird that it flared just a few hours after I took the first dose. As far as the beta srep, the one urogyne nurse I see for the IC said that she did not think that the beta strep would be causing me all this pain and IC with the bladder and urethra, but I am not so sure, I mean it is a bacteria that I know is normally in everyone, but not so high in number. She said mine found in the urine culture was not that high though, but what is considered a normal amount. There was no reference range on the report. Mine only said that I was between 1,000 - 10,000 CFU/ML of group B strep isolated. Whatever all that means I dont know. They never said what is considered normal. I am curious. I mean if it could harm a baby during childbirth, then it cant be that good for us, that is the way I look at it. There is a way to get rid of it, that is through taking pennicillin, or at least it knocks it way down. I cant take it though as I am allergic to it. Do you take any probiotics? I am taking a probiotic now( acidophilis mixed with some other probiotics). I am hoping maybe this will help with the BV and hopefully prevent a yeast infection. As far as the IC is concerned, if they actually do diagnose you with it, they will not be able to tell you what is causing it, as they know very little about the disease as of yet. Do you have bladder pain as well? With IC, usually it is urinary frequency, pain, urgency etc,, But to be honest, when I started having bladder issues, it started with just frequency, but no pain. I just recently about 7 months ago started getting the pain, and it has gotten worse in the last few months. I hope you do not have IC. Anyways, if you find anything that works for the BV or the Beta strep, let me know. Thanks, Jen Kristy Sokoloski wrote: Hi ,Yes, I've had B Strep show up in my urine before. Guest guest
, The penicillin does not get rid of the Group B Strep. It just stops the overgrowth til the next time that it becomes a problem. The Group B Strep does not harm us as a norm which is why most drs don't treat it with antibiotics in non-pregnant women. But I have to have it treated when the overgrowth becomes a problem b/c if not I have a lot of pain. It's more harmful to the baby which is why they give the pregnant woman the antibiotics during labor so that it is getting killed in the hours before the baby comes down the vagina. I have taken acidophillous in the past (am not right now) but it doesn't stop me from having issues with Strep B when it becomes an issue. Ask your pharmacist if the penicillin drugs are the only class for killing Strep B (I don't think so b/c I've used some other broad spectrum antibiotics for it before I think although most of the time it's been Amoxicillin) and explain why. There may be another way to help you out with this since you can't do the penicillins. I'm very familiar with the aspects of IC but as far as symptoms I met someone on one of the other lists I'm on for one of my other health problems that was just diagnosed with IC and she had no symptoms whatsoever. The only way to treat BV is either thru the Clindamyacin (not sure if Doxycycline could help it too although I used it more for cervical infections, some which were caused by BV and other bacteria such as Strep or the Flagyl or Metrogel. Not sure if the Metrogel can be done with a compounded base. May I ask what kind of a reaction it caused you to have? I'll explain why I ask when you write back. As for alternative treatments, they won't help an ongoing infection. Pls talk to an allergist about the issue with the penicillins to see what they suggest for you so that it can clear up the B Strep for the time being. Guest guest
Hi Kristy. The flagyl and metro-gel caused me to have severe burning in my tongue and made my taste buds swell. First the doc prescribed to me the flagyl pills. I took one and in the middle of the night I woke up with severe tongue burning. I stopped taking them as the pharmascist said it was probably a rare reaction I was having. Well, the doc then gave me the metro-gel to use. The same things happened with my tongue. I had no clue that the metrogel was the same drug as the flagyl except in the vaginal form, but when I told the nurse at the doctors office that I had the same reaction, she said that I was definitley sensitive to that drug and should not take it again. When you get the pain with the Beta strep, is it severe? What are your symptoms, do feel like you have a UTI in the bladder? I asked the nurse about the possibilty of the Beta strep causing my IC, and she said no. She said that the Beta strep even in high numbers usually does not cause any symptoms and that most women that have a high number of the beta strep do not even know it, and that it is found only through routine screening usually. She also told me that they dont treat it unless you are pregnant. She also said that Only the penicillin type drugs treat it, that other antibiotics were shown not to be effective for some reason. That sucks for me. I have thought about going to the allergist about it, but I do know that to become desensitized to the penicillin would likely take a loooooob time probably months to even a couple years possibly. My sister in law is allergic to cats and is seeing an allergist for that and having shots to become desensatized. She still has to get the shots and it has been over a year now and she still needs to take allergy meds and is still allergic to cats. It is an idea though. Do you remember how much of an overgrowth you had with the strep-B ? Was it alot. I asked the nurse yesterday about it and she said my numbers were not alarmingly high. I am just scared that by taking the clindamycin vaginal cream, that this will cause the beta strep to get worse. Did they find the beta strep in your vagina as well? I was reading sone info on the beta strep online and read one article that said that only people who have compromised immune systems get the beta strep in the bladder. Is this true? They made it seem like it is not normal for it to go there. I do notice that my IC is much worse since starting the clidamycin cream. I told the nurse and she said that she does not think that the cream is making me worse though, that I may just be in a flare. But I think it is bothering me. I was thinking about just stopping the cream now, I have been on it 5 days now, I am suppose to take it for 7. Do you think that 5 days is enough to kill the BV? I can tell you one thing, If I get the BV back, I dont think I am even going to bother treating it again. What is the point if it keeps coming back. And using antibiotics too much is no good and can make things worse I think as well as causing yeast infections. I have never heard of a person who has IC that does not have any pain or symptoms. Usually all have pain, though there may be a small few that just have the frequency. How did they diagnose her? Anyhow, I really wish I was not allergic to the penicillin so I could just take it and get rid of this. If a person gets a slight rash or a hive from taking the penicillin, does this mean they are severely allergic to it? When I took the ampicillin a couple months ago, I took one pill and ended up getting a small rash on my wirst, that is all. The doctor said to stop it though. I just wonder if I would have been able to stay on it, if maybe the rash or hive would not have progressed any further. I use to take the penicillin all the time when I was little and was never allergic to it. Maybe if you take a drug too many times you can become allergic to it. There has to be some sort of natural treatment for the Beta-strep. I mean what causes the B-strep to grow to much. There has to be a reason. Finding out would probably be near impossible though. I may look into seeing an allergist though, but I have a feeling it will take a long time to become desensitized to anything. Guest guest
Hi Jen, I was surprised when I read what the lady that said she had no symptoms of IC said about how they found that she had it and didn't have symptoms. This lady also had endometriosis which is the evil twin to IC so I'm guessing that the cystoscopy was done to check to see if she had endometriosis eating thru her bladder and that's how they found the IC. If one breaks out in hives that can be from a medication. As for getting allergies from taking a particular medication over and over again I wouldn't know. You would need to ask the pharmacist, like you would ask them if it's true that the penicillin drugs are the only ones that can treat the Strep B. My B Strep was always found vaginally but for it to be in the urine I don't see why it's not impossible. I don't know what the number for the overgrowth was each time I had to deal with B Strep. I just know that I had it b/c my dr would tell me and then we would treat it with antibiotics. My vulvodynia makes me prone to all kinds of infections including dealing with issues of Strep B. I thought about something with what you said about your tongue burning and was curious to know something. Have you ever had your hormones tested? Sometimes hormone imbalances can cause this. We just had a thread occur again for the first time in a while about a condition called burning mouth syndrome. And yes, I do have a compromised immune system in part b/c of my vulvodynia but it's also compromised b/c I also have endometriosis (also why eventually I need to check to see if I have IC). And yes, the Metrogel is the same thing as Flagyl, only difference is that it goes straight to the source of the infection without having to go thru the blood stream the way the oral formulation will. The creams/gels, etc are often better than the oral b/c it bypasses the bloodstream which can minimize the chances of allergies in many cases. As for your question about the Strep and the IC that should have gone to the dr and not the nurse. She's not in a position to answer a question like that. She was also not in a position to tell you if penicillins were the only kind of meds that could treat the problem. That should come straight from your dr herself as well as from your pharmacist (and they know more about the drugs that drs prescribe than the drs themselves). Whenever I have gotten infections, not just Strep B I've had a lot of pain that could only be treated with narcotics until I got an antibiotic to clear up the problem until the next time. Clindamyacin is for BV so I don't know if it would make the Strep B worse or not only b/c they come from different strains of bacteria. That would be a question for your pharmacist. And yes, normally they don't treat women with Strep B unless they are pregnant but I am an unusual case, I have to have the Strep B treated period. I can't answer the question about whether or not that only in people with compromised immune systems would have the Strep B show up in the urine. I would ask the dr about that. As for the medication for your BV pls continue to take it although you have done it for 5 days. The whole prescription must be complete in order to make sure that it is taken care of. I would recommend drinking lots of water so that when you have to go to the bathroom to go potty that the stream of urine is very weak and can't aggrivate the problem. But ask your pharmacist if it is a good idea to stop the medicine at 5 days since your dr is probably not on call this weekend since you aren't sure. Every time BV comes back it needs to be treated so that it doesn't cause other problems. I've only had a couple of antibiotics cause me issues with yeast. And there are only certain meds used to treat BV as far as I know. There is no natural treatment for B Strep as far as I know b/c of the way that it is but I can do some digging thru one of the newsletters I get from about.com to see what I can come up with. Pls feel free to e-mail me privately any time hun. Kristy ________________________________________________________________________________\ ____ Sucker-punch spam with award-winning protection.
