Guest guest
, I don't really buy in bulk. My ex-wife has done me right in a few MINOR areas. She's included me in her company's Costco and Sam's club cards. Hmm, she's changing jobs now so I wonder if that gravy train is gone. Anyway, most of my shopping is Dutch rather than bulk. What's that? I check all the ad circulars (online usually) and sometimes some coupon sites and stuff. Then I just buy a LOT at a time. This helps with stores like Meijer that issue rain checks. I live about 20 minutes from about a dozen Meijer stores now so if I feel like investing a day in shopping and Meijer is doing a poor job of stocking I can still get quite a lot of a particular sale item, a lot of rain checks and still come out ahead even with $3/gal gas. I don't know any bulk/wholesale stores that sell Hormel Chili but you've got me thinking. I'm going to send some emails off today and/or make some phone calls. Meijer did have a sale on Hormel a month ago. It was buy 10 for $10 get the 11th can free. I stupidly did not exploit this very well. Let's see them try that again though. I've found different Meijer stores have it at different prices. Anywhere from $1.34-$1.57. Strange. I sometimes put a little grated low-fat parmesan cheese on it, which I'm sure adds to the sodium. I love onions but for some weird reason haven't added any yet. I suppose maybe I'm trying to be some can, bowl, and microwave, and then eat purist or something. Hey I'm a bachelor, sue me. My kids don't like onions anyway. I think the next time I make some I'm going to do some onions and some hot sauce too. I do buy Costco beef jerky in bulk. http://www.oberto.com is the brand. They have it for about half the price of Meijer. I tend to eat quite a lot of it. Does it ever go bad? It travels well (doesn't really make a mess, gets past security at events, etc.). Even in bulk it's sort of expensive but it is filling and I like it as do my kids. I at least THINK I save a lot of money. Rain checks are great as I use them often. For some reason I'm able to keep them straight in my head too (as to what I have). I need to start keeping them in a small folder in my car though so I have them when I'm shopping as I've forgotten to bring them with sometimes even when I put them on my list. Always shop with a list. http://www.hormel.com/brands/brandview3.asp?id=710 I love how they have instructions on how to make it. > > > > Hi H., > > > > I eat Hormel Turkey chili because it is a good source of protein > and easy to make when I don't have other food in the house. Guest guest
I love Hormel chili but I didn't think it would be allowed. I couldn't have it when I was on a low carb diet because of the carbs so I thought it would be a no-no for WLS as well. I'm happy to hear I can still have chili and refried beans. I love mexican food, so I'll have to give up chips, rice and tortillas (except for tiny bites), but not everything! I know where Mike is coming from on shopping at Meijer. I have about 8 bags each of frozen chicken breasts and fish filets from their Buy 1 get 1 free sales. I have the female gene that says if it is on sale, I must buy it. I had to fight off the urge to buy more chicken and fish today because it was on sale even though I don't need it. It'll really be hard to get used to shopping when I'm eating only a fraction of what I eat now. in Howell > > > > > > Hi H., > > > > > > I eat Hormel Turkey chili because it is a good source of > protein > > and easy to make when I don't have other food in the house. Guest guest
Amen to the chicken breasts! I've got something like 5 bags in my chest freezer. Here's a dilema, this past Saturday they had shrimp on sale buy one bag get two bags free. That's a savings of $20 or something. I can't go buying those though because one bag of shrimp lasts me a whole week and that's dinner every night to get it gone before it spoils. Then I've got to down two more bags? I don't think so. The stuff ends up going bad even in the freezer after a couple months. Actually if you have some garlic or scampi receipes for shrimp I'd really appreciate it. I suppose I could look it up online but maybe someone has a good one? Just make sure you don't get the chili with beans to avoid carbs. Really bean carbs aren't all that bad though. My dietician and I sit around and chat about how carbs aren't bad, only bad carbs are bad. Fresh fruit, starchy vegies, whole grains, etc. all good in moderate quantities. We laugh about a friend of mine five years ago who was big into the Atkins diet. He actually tried to convince me that lettuce had too many carbs in it and would keep you from acheiving Ketosis. RIGGGHHHT....I should have gotten that in writing or on tape. He cracked me up for a week with that one. I like taking 3 chicken breasts, putting them in a crock pot with some bbq sauce and letting that go for a few hours. Be careful that you don't cook it too long and dry it out. Dried Chicken is the Devil to the pouch. I've heard from others and can attest myself that shopping is probably just as hard to get used to changing as eating. With eating you just throw up and learn the hard way to slow down. With shopping you find yourself with food going bad all the time. I try to redirect my shopping impulses to buying non perishables like canned food, dried food, health and beauty (I've a got a drawer full of bar soap and anti-perspirant from a sale). It's hard...good luck! Guest guest
Can you eat an entire chicken breast after WLS, at least fairly early on? I'm wondering if the tenders would be better from a portion standpoint. I really know what you mean about the shrimp. I keep throwing it away or trying to eat it freezer burned. I cook my chicken and fish (I love the tilapia and it's on sale!!) on a Foreman grill. Sometimes I overdo it and get chicken or fish jerky. I guess I'll have to be better about that or I'll hurl! I did the Atkins, but I wasn't that insane over it. I was about 20g or less per day for about 6 months. I lost 80 pounds but gained 40 back as soon as I went back to " normal " eating. At least I stabilized and didn't keep gaining. My PCP sent me to a regular nutritionist who chewed me out for doing low carb. You'll love this.......she said my brain needed more glucose than that provided and that I was going to pass out while driving and kill someone....LOL! What a moron. I told her that I knew that the body could make glucose from fat stores. She agreed but said it was not as efficient. Well, isn't that how we burn fat, by not providing our body what it needs so it has to go elsewhere. Just to show you that all nutritionists are not created equal. Luckily the bariatric nutritionist told me pretty much the same things I've been reading in the forums. > > > > > > > > > > Hi H., > > > > > > > > > > I eat Hormel Turkey chili because it is a good source of > > > protein > > > > and easy to make when I don't have other food in the house. > It > > > > actually was on my suggested list of foods during the pureed > > > stage. > > > > > > > > > > in Virginia > > > > > 299/239/150 > > > > > Lap RNY: 5/3/06 > > > > > > > > > . > > > > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
, I'm not sure exactly when I could eat a whole breast. Actually I think I can pretty much do two now if they're not accompanied by cheese. Even with some veggies. Basically a normal meal. I would think a whole breast would be doable at 3 months. Before that purchasing the tenders would be good and try for 1-2 of those. Heck even now I still like the tenders. Yeah you don't want to get lazy with the grill and burn your food. You have to watch that stuff in the crock pot too because it can get desert dry. I love the foreman grill for cooking that stuff on. I don't eat the fish enough. My son will try it but doesn't really care for it. My daughter repeatedly tells me she doesn't like things that live in the water. Yeah, that'd better change. I do think they might both at least tolerate salmon, which I love. Granted that's a pretty pricey fish but it does sometimes go on sale. It's one of the few proteins I've found that has a rational amount of sodium in it too. There are zealots in every field, even mine, IT. I tend to get a little preachy on certain things too but I can let others do their own thing and suffer the consequences as I laugh quietly out with friends at dinner/bar. Guest guest
Hmm maybe we're talking about different sized breasts. I'm certain I can do a whole one. Probably not two though since I limit myself to 20 minutes eating and that always fills me to the brim. A whole breast has about 300 calories, maybe 7g of fat, but probably over 50g of protein. Very low in sodium too. Chicken is great stuff. Costco had Propel on sale this week so I bought two cases today to take some to a Tiger's game tomorrow night. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi H., > > > > > > > > > > > > > > I eat Hormel Turkey chili because it is a good source > of > > > > > protein > > > > > > and easy to make when I don't have other food in the > house. > > > It > > > > > > actually was on my suggested list of foods during the > pureed > > > > > stage. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > in Virginia > > > > > > > 299/239/150 > > > > > > > Lap RNY: 5/3/06 > > > > > > > > > > > > > . > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
, Better go get that Propel! I usually career two 16.9oz of water in my front pockets and one in my hand when I go on a walk. I easily kill that in a couple miles so I end up buying some more water for the walk back. I guess you could say I have a heavy drinking problem. HA! Sweet! Glad to hear there will be more IT nerds at the game. Yes it is against Texas. I was born in Beaumont but I think I'll cheer for the Tigers. I don't really consider myself a Tiger's fan since we've got the Whitecaps here in town. But the Tigers are doing so well this year what the heck, the drive is worth it. Besides my son has been to an NBA game, an NFL game and he wants to get in some other pro games. My family loves shopping in Howell. Yeah it's about 1hr 50 minutes (I tend to drive fast, heh). I'll go there when I get down to an XL I think. Guest guest
Mike, You might be careful carrying the water that way on your walks.
