Guest guest
I take it you've tried teaching him to swallow them... if what you tried didn't work, there's two things that I know of-- one is a " pill shooter " that you can get at a um, er, pet store-- it is useful for getting them the " idea " of swallowing the pill because it shoots it towards the back of the throat. Another idea is to put the capsule under their tongue and then tell them to drink the liquid. Somehow the capsule just floats down with the liquid if they aren't thinking too hard about it. Otherwise, I do have a friend of a 5 yo autie who she used to just have him chew everything and then drink a liquid afterwards... he was cooperative but this also gave him an incentive to learn how to swallow it because some of it didn't taste so good. :-/ I'm sure others have more suggestions because I remember there are some others on here who had this issue. Guest guest
Taste them all, only give him the ones that taste good, and don't give him any choice in the matter. Andy. . . .. . . . Hi! For one of my kids, if the supplement makes him feel sick, he will refuse it. For example, previously he had no problems with the supplement mixture, but a few weeks ago he started protesting. I reduced the quantity of vitamins and he is okay with it now. Nice to know he is healing and not needing such a high dose of vitamins now. Anyway your child might not like the bad feeling of a supplement or more that he might not tolerate, so consider that. Dana
Guest guest
That's what we did with my son at first, then I would make him watch me grind them up, and tell him if he would swallow the pills I wouldn't have to force the mix down him. He soon tried swallowing the pills/capsules and now he's a pro at it!! Guest guest
If it's not a banned substance for your son, chocolate dessert is brilliant for disguising nasty tastes: you can stick a lot of peculiar supplements in a pot of it before it becomes unpalateable. Guest guest
We had the same problem until we taught our child to swallow pills. I can tell you how we did this if you are interested. lyndhurstmom3 wrote: > Hi! Does anyone have any ideas on how to get my 5 yo son to take his > supplements? Guest guest
I have been mixing my son's supplements into his potato milk sweetened with stevia nightly and then letting him drink it throughout the day. I do not add the dmg (I figured it is finicky if they have to put it into a foil packet) or the oil ones (E, primrose, DHA). Are there any others that can't last in the refridgerated potato milk for 24 hours? And is there a problem having him get small doses throughout the day rather than larger less frequent doses. Also related - he takes all kids of supplements, but refuses the C because it is tart, I suspect. Suggesstions? thank you in advance. [ ] Son Won't Take Supplements My boys each take about 25 supplements twice a day -- capsules, tablets, and liquid....neither is able to swallow pills. I found the easiest method was to mix everything together (open the capsules & crush the tablets) with a homemade " chocolate frosting " . Since they are on the GFCF diet, I use Fleischmanns No Salt stick margerine, powdered sugar, marshmallow fluff (makes it thick without using more sugar), almond or hazelnut soy milk, Ah-Laska chocolate syrup. I make a big batch that lasts about 2 weeks in the fridge. I try to use as little frosting as possible since it's so sweet, but it's the only thing that has worked for us so far. One of my kids needs frequent sips of water inbetween spoonfuls, but the other eats it down pretty quickly. Hope this helps someone! AAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!! Use something without hydrogenated fat in it. Most nut (or other) oils make perfectly decent frostings. Coconut oil is very butter like in consistency and makes an excellent frosting. > powdered sugar, marshmallow fluff (makes > it thick without using more sugar), almond or hazelnut soy milk, Ah-Laska > chocolate syrup.
