paula,

giving benadryl orally and topically will help. Cut fingernails very short

and disinfect regularly with alchohol. Have kids wear long sleeves and pants

(cotton) to keep from scratching boo boos directly into infection. Oatmeal

baths or baths with baking soda are natural remedies.

I've tried the natural remedies but after 4 weeks of my kid still scratching,

we gave up and went the medical route. It never did burn out until I used

cortisone.

Over the counter medications tend to either overly dry the area using alcohol

or acids, these are not really good, their purpose is to stop the oozing but

we found them to irritate more than they helped. I remember some over the

counter which contained Rhuli or something like that which was a little helpful

but not much. Something with benzocaine to deaden the pain may stop the

itching just a little, but we ended up with hydrocortisone before it was over.

The

next round of that stuff I went straight for the hydrocortisone to stop it

early.....and it worked.

Calamine lotion will help with the drying if there is oozing as well as

making a paste out of baking soda and applying it to skin.

good luck,

claire

Plantain, a weed always found growing where poison oak does works very

well.

Crush it and apply to the affected area

Aloe vera concentrate, specifically with 10,000mps rating works well

topically.

[ ] Remedy for poison oak

Both of my boys have had poison oak for about a week now. It's getting

really bad, and they won't leave it alone. My oldest is spreading it

all over himself. Does anyone have suggestions on how to combat this

stuff? I don't want them to go on any meds like prednisone. I bought

some spray on stuff, but it stings so bad.

There is some stuff I bought at the HFS called " oak away " . It is a

spray and is supposed to stop itching or poison oak, poison ivy and

poison sumac. The ingredients are herbs (including plantain, I

notice!) plus " ocean water " and isopropyl alcohol. I have not used

it so I can't say if it works.
