Guest guest
My daughter has been experiencing this on and off for the past 3 years and we have found that lack of vitamin B2 and/or B6 can cause this. After we supplement these two vitamins, it goes away. With my daughter, we have found it is more a B2 deficiency than B6. I also noted that her lips were more likely to crack and peel when giving her extra B6 with no B2. Just this fall we had my daughter tested by Great Plains Lab and she was found to have excessively high serum copper and low ceruloplasmin, and we have been treating her for this. Of note, three years ago, an organic acid test revealed that she was high in glutaric acid which may indicate a deficiency of riboflavin (B2). We are using molybdenum to help with the excess copper and her lips are cracking and peeling more. So maybe the stepped-up excretion of copper is taxing her B2? I read that copper will tax body B2 levels and like I stated earlier, extra B2 helps heal her lips. I'm just a mom with no bio or chem background so this information is pretty much anecdotal with some insight gleaned through reading and experience. Hope this helps. > My dd's lower lip has been chronically chapped for about a month > now... any idea of what deficiency that signals? > TIA, > W
Guest guest
I forgot to add something that also seemed to affect my daughter's lips. Whenever we use a particular digestive enzyme that has lysine in its formulation her lips crack. I found some research on the net that suggests when " patients with defects in glutaryl-CoA oxidase are loaded with lysine, the glutaric aciduria increases, suggesting that glutaryl-CoA oxidase is involved in lysine metabolism. " Before she could swallow the enzyme capsules we thought her chapped lips were the result of the direct contact of the enzymes on her lips. But now that she can swallow the capsules whole we realized there was something more to it. Other digestive enzymes do not cause this reaction. Does your daughter use any supplements with lysine? Guest guest
Well, that might make sense because this did seem to start when I started giving her some extra zinc and molybdenum. Hmmm... gotta find some B2 now I guess! lOL! W > So maybe the stepped-up excretion of > copper is taxing her B2? Guest guest
No, I don't think any of her supp's have lysine in them. But I will check. Thanks for the tip!
