Guest guest
Hi everyone, I just found this article regarding Prandial Rhinorrhea. Hope it helps. RUNNY NOSE WHILE EATING Dr. Rob Danoff appears Tuesdays. You can reach him at ford Hospital Bucks County, 380 N. Oxford Valley Road, Falls, where he is director of Family Practice Residency. E-mail: rdanoff@.... Tuesday, March 19, 2002 My husband constantly complains that his nose starts to run only while he eats. It is so bad that he brings those small plastic bags of tissues whenever he goes out to eat. He is really self-conscious of this problem. What can be done, and is this a sign he is allergic to food? Thanks from a Drippy Husband's Wife. I am going to give you all some free medical advice that cost thousands of dollars to learn in medical school. Your husband's condition is called prandial rhinorrhea, huge sounding words that basically mean having a runny nose while eating a meal. I know this is very annoying, and sometimes embarrasing. What happens is that our bodies really get our juices flowing when we start to smell or eat delicious tasting meals. Most times it involves our salivary glands and stomach acid. However, in some this also overly stimulates our nasal mucus and sometimes even our tears. The degree of this reaction varies greatly in many people, however the spicier the meal, the greater the reaction. Sometimes taking an antihistamine or even a decongestant before the meal can help relieve the symptoms, but it is always best to check with your physician before taking these medications.
