Guest guest
My 19mo old has had a lingering cold for over a week & now she has a rattling in her throat & chest that worries me. Her doc is on vacation (of course) & he's more naturally oriented. Right now I'm giving Chestal (a homeopathic cough med), with small doses of C & Transfer Factor along with a drop or 2 of propolis herb now & then. Is there anything that can help break this mucous up & prevent it from getting any worse? My MIL is getting over pnemonia so this is of concern for me... Thank you, Michele
Guest guest
Thanks W... other than this rattling cough & hoarse throat that started today, she seems fine. Theres no fever & she's been playing & is breathing fine except for a very stuffy nose (which I use the bulb on now & then as she hates it). Shes sleeping soundly right now but mouth breathing; just very stuffy. I will watch it closely & try to look for the Naturmade expectorant if I can get out tomorrow. Thanks! Doing some searching on google for information about how many respirations per minute and what are some signs that a child is having trouble breathing, might be helpful for you to consider. For Ethan, he has asthma, and when he gets a cold or is about to get one, we see the little indentation at the base of his neck coming in and out when he breathes... ribcage looks more " visible " ... as things progress the breathing gets shallower and more frequent and those are signs that we give him albuterol to literally open up the airways via nebulizer. So again, difficulty breathing needs to be taken seriously. The first time Ethan ever had a problem, he just had that rattling sound and we didn't know anything was " wrong " but we figured we'd take him to the doc to get an rx for a cold medicine to break it up. They hooked the oxygen saturation things to his fingertips and his levels were in the upper 70's low 80's. He had NO other obvious signs that anything was wrong. Had that level continued into the night we probably would have had a trip to the ER. And that was the start of the " asthma " . Prior to this event, we'd never really noticed anything significant. SO again, if she's not snapping out of it relatively soon, consult a doctor. If you think it is truly related to mucous buildup, then guaifenesin will break up mucous--it is an expectorant. Naturmade sells one and I found it at our local safeway. Healthfood stores may have a guaifenesin brand. Robitussin might sell a guaifenesin-only product. Guest guest
Actually I have the name wrong-- it's Naturade not naturemade Do a froogle.com search and type in Naturade Guaifenesin and it will call up the product as well as some " children's combo's " and list prices. For anyone else, Froogle.com was pointed out to me as a great way to find the best deal on a particular product.
