Yes! I even asked my doctor about it and we had this discussion about

mast cells. Totally weird.

Okay. Just to clarify. You have one certain spot that itches after you eat wheat and/or gluten? Too weird! Are you allergic to wheat only? Or celiac/gluten intolerant?

Yes! I even asked my doctor about it and we had this discussion about mast cells. Totally weird.

I went to the neighbor's birthday party last night and started drinking a beer without thinking about it. I've only been GF for two weeks and drink beer only about twice a year. It was only because I said it was really malty that I even thought about it! Anyway, I decided to go ahead and finish the beer since I'd already done the damage. And I also had a minute bite of cake that my daughter managed to stick in my mouth without me seeing what it was. When I went to bed I had gas. But I woke up in the middle of the night with the bottom of my right foot itching like mad. Now that I think about it, this used to happen all the time, at all times of the day and night, but hasn't since I've been GF. Tell me more about what your doctor said, please. I just looked up mast cells and came across mastocytosis. Please tell me that's not what s/he was talking about. It can be aggravated by food allergies.

Man, now I'm itchy all over. ;o)

I've had all kinds of symptoms, but one of the strangest is getting a

feeling like a pin is stabbing me, in the big toe, and always

somewhere else at the same time. I usually feel it in the hand or

arm, as well as the big toe.

Before I knew I had Celiac, I attributed these sensations to a

condition called dysautonomia - which is linked to mitral valve

prolapse (which I also have). Now I don't know what causes this, but

we're probably " wired " differently than most people.

The mitral valve prolapse syndrome's symptoms, and most others that

originate from Celiac, have lessened since going gluten free, and I'm

taking certain supplements such as magnesium, calcium, Co-Q10, omega

3, hawthorne, etc. It is possible that a nutritional deficiency,

from Celiac, worsened the mitral valve condition. Anyway, the MVP is

not serious, or dangerous, in my case.

The DPP-IV enzyme supplement, from Kirkman Labs, that I take for

protection against accidental gluten ingestion, may also be helping

me recover. I've been gluten free for about 5 months, have gained

some weight, and feel much better than I have in a long time.

That's very interesting. Glad your symptoms have gotten better. My mother also has MVP. Do you think it is in any way related to celiac? Or do you think eating gluten made your body less able to handle any other ailments you have?

I think that the gluten-based malnourishment definitly affected me.

I've had iron-deficient anemia, vitamin A deficiency (many years

ago), so many dental problems I've lost count, the heart stuff, and

more.

Some astute MVP people on another forum had excellent advice about

calcium and magnesium supplementation. I'd guess that the Celiac

reduced my stores and it caused the Mitral Valve Prolapse Syndrome to

be worse for wear. I have not run into anybody else with MVP that

KNOWS they have Celiac, but I'm sure that there are some. Since IBS

is another symptom of MVP, that is exactly what I thought my Celiac

symptoms were - of course, this was before my wife matched my gastro

symptoms with celiac and we put two and two together. I then got

tested by blood, endo, and biopsy. All tests were positive, but the

doctor said I had a " mild to moderate " case; I guess he meant that it

could have been worse.

I saw a neurologist last year (Sept. 2004) and went on Zoloft. This

may have helped, but I don't think that during the " gluten " period it

was being absorbed properly. I probably don't need it any more, but

I'm going to continue taking it for a while just to be on the

safe side.
