Hi Tres, We have had a poll on this a couple of times, but we don't get a lot of participation. I control by sensible eating, exercise, positive attitude and Faith in God. I get A1c done once a year and my last three A1c's have been 5.22 or less. hugs Eunice

Hi Tres, There are some people that do prefer meds and it is nothing wrong with that. I have an uncle that tells me, " I take a little pill every day so that I'm not so limited in what I can eat " . hugs Eunice
Guest guest
I echo Eunice's words: " I control by sensible eating, exercise, positive attitude and Faith in God, " and in my case I add the words Glargine insulin and Metformin. I may need to be on meds for the rest of my life, and if that's the case, I just thank the Lord they're available to me - what lifesavers they are! Guest guest
Have never thought of it that way, but then I always get the side effects of pills. Guest guest
It's so important that everyone understand that diabetes varies for each and every one of us - for every person it is a unique experience and disease. We all have different levels of pancreatic function - and dysfunction! I have worked so hard at diet, exercise and lifestyle - I would put my efforts up against anyone's! I eat right, control my weight well, and have tried to " de-stress " as much as is humanly possible. And yet I still need meds. It's not a preference for me as it is for Eunice's uncle - it is a necessity so that I may continue to live. No one need feel ashamed because they require medications to help control their diabetes anymore than one should feel ashamed if they need medications for cancer, heart conditions, GI conditions or any other ailment. It is imperative for all diabetics to understand this! There are as many forms of diabetes out there as there are pancreas's - one for each and every one of us! I wish us all the best - meds or not. Guest guest
I didn't mean to imply that one should be ashamed to take meds I was just wondering about the ratio of non to those who do. Didn't mean to upset anyone. Maybe I should have just not mentioned it, sorry if anyone was offended. Guest guest
One more point...diabetes is quite frequently a PROGRESSIVE disease. Right now you may be able to control on diet and exerices, next year you may not be able to. This is not a black and white disease at all. If you are insulin resistant, you may be pushing out TOO much insulin. This can burn out your pancreas over time. Some of the meds, including Metformin, Actos and Avandia reduce the amount of insulin your body is pumping. They may help prevent some of that burnout. It's a complicated choice. Yup, some have side effects, some don't like meds, some are at early stages or may have a mild case. There are no simple solutions, nothing perfect for everyone. Guest guest
Oh, I wasn't offended at all myself Tres! I'm so happy you don't need meds - it's wonderful! As well as being diabetic, I work with diabetic patients though who feel such guilt, especially when it is necessary for them to make a transition from no meds to oral meds, or from oral meds to insulin. They often feel like failures, ashamed, and it's so sad on top of everything else they have to deal with. I like to take the opportunity to say it whenever it comes up - it might just help someone who's feeling a little down on themselves today!
