I had a lap/hyst to resect my uterine septum in Jan. 2002. Here are

my answers:

I had very sore muscles - all over- due to the gas used in the lap.

That went away completely on the second day. I was amazed at how the

gas affected me in that way. I had a sore and tender belly button for

a few weeks, in the end it was just itchy and a nuisance. I

recommend comfy drawstring pants for at least a few days.

I also had a very sore throat from the intubation tube, with an

annoying cough that persisted for a couple of days. I drank lots and

lots of water and herbal tea.

I had the surgery on a Thursday and returned to work the following

Monday. I could have gone to work sooner, but I had to travel 5

hours for my surgery and we made a long weekend out of it. I went

cross country skiing on the Saturday following my surgery and was

back to my normal exercise routine after that (bearing in mind that I

had been exercising on a regular basis already).

Well, I had very long cycles after my surgery. I was charting and so

I knew I was ovulating. I became pregnant the following July on a

cycle with ovulation on day 34 (and carried my son to full term). I

had been pregnant twice prior to my surgery, but miscarried both

times.

For me the surgery was not a problem and I recoverd quickly.

Hi Sandy,

I had the surgery twice because the first dr did not remove enough of

the septum. I like your drs plan, maybe remove smaller horn of a UU

if it could not sustain a pg, do nothing to a BU and remove the

septum if SU. He seems to know his Mullerian anomalies. Also good

to know that he will take care of any endo while he is in there.

My answers are below:

I really wasn't in pain. My shoulders ached a " little " and my throat

was hoarse and sore from the intubation tube. My belly button was

sore for about 2 weeks. I wore loose waist pants during those weeks

so that nothing rubbed too tightly against my belly button. The

other incision lower down around the bikini line did not hurt at

all. Your dr may put 1 or 2 stitches in each of the incisions that

are made for the lap or he may just put a bandaid over them to heal.

I had my surgery on a Wed and went back to work on Fri. HOwever, I

was so physically tired and my belly was tender that I decided to go

home after only working a half day. I was fine by Saturday.

After the last surgery, we decided with my RE to be more aggressive

with ttcing. We decided this b/c it took us awhile to get pg before

I lost it to a m/c and then I needed the 2 surgeries, so we wanted to

just get pg the fastest way possible. I did clomid/IUI and then

moved onto inj/IUI and got pg on the 6th cycle. I had a dd on

10/2/2003. You may not need or decide to do the meds depending on

what your feelings are about your situation.

Bring a pillow in the car on your way to the hospital. Hugging the

pillow after surgery will feel comforting to you on the way home.

Wear loose comfortable clothing and get lots of rest when you get

home. I know how anxious you must feel. Tell your husband or

whoever will be taking you to surgery to remember EVERYTHING that the

dr says after surgery. It's so hard to remember to ask the dr all of

the questions that you have. Maybe write down your most urgent

questions for dh to ask the dr, if you have any. I hope that your dr

will also have a follow-up appt with you if you find that you are

SU. That way they can do another HSG or in-office hys or SHG to make

sure that the septum is gone after you have healed. That's how I

found out that my 1st surgery did not work...I have an HSG a month

later and found it was still there.

Hi Sandy,

I had a lap/hyst and then a hyst alone but nothing was done

operatively speaking for any, so I can just tell you about the

basics of the surgery...

For my first one I was with an RE who must have been a sadist

because he gave me a diaherria-inducing drink the night before

surgery & it was so bad that I was crying and begging for immodium

the day of. My second RE told me that all of that was *completely

unnecessary* (unless I had bowel problems, which I don't). So, first

of all, if they told you to drink this drink and you don't have

bowel problems - argue! It's not necessary and definitely not worth

the discomfort! Just eat light the day before and you'll be fine.

The hysteroscopy part of it is (usually) non operative - just a

camera in there checking things out - though if they find something

that needs taking care of, they will do it at that time. For me this

was not the case so I don't know much about that except for the

basic hysteroscopy. The lap they go thru the belly button, so

afterwards that's going to be oozy and gross for a little while, but

no real pain associated with that. It is a weird area to heal

however, due to the shape, so it's fairly common to heal a little

strangely - in my case a piece of skin healed so the rest of the

(small) wound stayed open longer than it should have - I mentioned 2

weeks after the lap that my belly button hadn't healed yet and they

were shocked - it should heal long before 2 weeks in any case, so if

it doesn't, get them to look at it again.

You'll be under anesthesia (local or more likely twilight sedation)

so you will go to sleep and wake up with it all over. You might

feel naseaus when you wake up - before you go under ask if it's

possible to put anti-nausea meds into your IV, usually they do, but

if not, ask - and you'll be a little groggy for a little while.

They'll let you leave an hour to 3 hours after the procedure

depending on when you wake up. Plan to go home and sleep the rest of

the day because you'll probably be knocked out by the anesthesia.

The next couple of days you'll be more tired than usual but if you

must work, you can - but better to take at least the day off after

the surgery & definitely take it very easy physically for a week-ish

afterwards.

I didn't have much pain after either of my surgeries, but again,

they didn't do much - in the first one they removed some stuff from

my uterus, but nothing major was done - so you might have more pain

depending on what they end up doing. For me, the hsg was much worse

since it was so painful & this was a bigger deal but far less

painful. I definitely appreciated sleeping through the worst of it!
