Guest guest
Hello all, My 4yr old daughter just got her implant turned on this past tuesday. When they first turned it on she went wild, she cried and got sick. I knew she might cry some but nothing like she did. The appointment was set for 3hrs but we we're only there about 45 minutes, that's how bad it was. The audiologist said to try to turn it on when we got home but not to expect her to respond to sound because they had it turned down so low she didn't think she would hear anything but for us to try and get her to at least wear the head and ear piece. When we got home I try to put the head piece on and she wouldn't have it. If she even seen any part of it across the room she would start crying and shaking her head no! After many attempts I got the head piece on but didn't turn anything on. After a little bit when she was watching TV I turned everything in the house off and muted the TV and turned the implant on but turned the box down to (0). The second I hit the on button she screamed and grabbed her head and went in the floor. I don't know what to do, How will she ever get use to it if I can't even turn it on, I can't hardly even get the head piece on without her fighting & crying and when I get it on her she starts rubbing her head against anything she can find to get it off, she acts almost as bad over wearing it without it being on as she does when I turn it on. She really hates the sight of it. Does anyone have any advice about getting her to wear her implant? I need all the help I can get. Sorry this was so long. Guest guest
I would let her wear it not turned on to get used to that idea. Also, I never put the coil on and then turn it on. hates it. I always turn it on first and then put her coil on. Did she react to the sounds to develop the map? I dealt with over stimulation for long enough to know that I would insist that they give her a map with very low settings and work up from there. When is her next appt.? Does this center have a lot of experience with kids? Has she ever heard sounds before? I am sure it is disappointing to start this way. But as Kat said here recently, it should be termed activation month(s). It takes some time. Try when she is not tired and not just waking up. But as I learned the hard way, trust the kid. Good luck and keep posting questions. You will get it worked out. Mom to 10, 5 (n24 4/00) and
Guest guest
Hi My advice is dont give up.let her wear it for a week with out it turned on. I know you are excited for her to hear but she has been deaf for four years whats one more week.It will take time but it will happen.Dont feel guilty about making her wear it. When you finally do turn it on dont exspect her to wear it all day it may be 5 min at a time at first good luck debbie courtney 5.10 years n24c 1-17-00 ...., " Kerryn " <kerrynperry@o...> wrote: > I'm sorry I have no advice for you, but on reading your message, really feel for you and what you must be going through. It sounds really difficult and I just wanted to send you my good wishes and thoughts and hope it gets easier. I could try and guess at ideas to help your daughter try her new gear, but I'm sure there are lots of CI parents here who will write soon with good suggestions.
