Guest guest
Lamictal-25mg 1/2 morning and 1/2 evening She has a 12 week chart to increase dosage Keppra-250mg each morning and evening This med to be discontinued once the Lamictal is up to correct dose Riley age 7 was put on these 2 meds for petit mal seizures. Beginning the 1st day the seizures quit. On the 7th day she had 2 and the last few days she's having more. Her ADHD is really bad, just like she didn't take any Ritalin at all. She is flat wild, totally out of control. I think she is getting more tired faster, her eyes are red rimmed, etc. like when a person is exhausted. She also has separation anxiety now. When she wakes up it's like she never rested (has always been a problem but seems worse) and her mom wonders if she having seizures at night, is that what's wearing her out worse, and how would Shenan know if that's happening because they are not the thrashing around type of seizures? Do the seizure meds cancel out the Ritalin? Make her ADHD worse? Is the mito getting worse anyway (seizures and ADHD being mito)? Is her behavior side effects of the seizure meds? If anyone knows or wants to guess or can tell me your experiences with any of this I'd appreciate it. Scoggins

Guest guest
, I don't know what to say except- anytime there is a change in " normal behavior " concurrent with a change in meds, it's time to call the doctor. Guest guest
http://www.aesnet.org/AED/index.cfm A Brain Research Scientist on another site recommended this site for AEM research. Both Lamictal and Keppra are listed. Under Keppra, it lists “behavioral abnormalities” as a serious side effect. I would strongly encourage you to contact the Neurologist for further input. I doubt your daughter is on a therapeutic does of Lamictal yet. However, she could still experience reactions even though not on therapeutic dose. My son regressed (lost the ability to sit, roll, and babble) while on Lamictal. I know it was the Lamictal and not mito since the skills returned when I lowered the dose. Again, my sons reaction to Lamictal was skill related and not behavioral. I read stories of people having behavioral reactions (severe depression among other things) to weaning from Lamictal. I haven’t read anything regarding behavioral issues to increasing the dose. Next, I am sure you already know you cannot just stop these medications cold turkey even if you believe the patient experiences a poor reaction. You have to wean them. Please don’t do anything without first discussing with your Neurologist. On that note, the on-call Neuro tried to tell me my sons regression was mito related and not the med. However, my son had other reactions to the Lamictal (severe ataxia and nausea – wouldn’t eat, nearly dehydrated) so I KNEW it was the lamictal. Whatever you do TRUST YOUR GUT! You know your child. Lastly, there are times we have horrible choices regarding our childrens health and medications. My son was vomiting to the point of dehydration. We had to get the vomiting under control. ALL meds with seizures listed as side effects bring them out for my son. Sigh… All the anti-vomiting drugs also have seizure side effects. We did everything we could do to help him before making the choice for the anti-vomiting meds. He had the seizures and abnormal EEG. That was when we started the Lamictal. I hated giving my son one med to counteract the side effects of another med. BUT, I had to do something. Horrible choices. Fortunately in our case once we got the vomiting controlled, we were able to stop both the anti-vomiting drug and the anti-seizure drug. Good luck and trust your gut. Guest guest
Lee and Bec, Thanks for your knowledge. I'll check out the website and Shenan will call the neurologist first thing in the morning. I told her she should call today and someone would be on call. Afterall, it's Children's Hospital and they are always open and I felt also that the doctor should know what was going on. I told her I would ask all of you though. Then tonight she told me she didn't call today. I'm forwarding her these 2 e-mails although I read them to her immediately to remind her and will remind her in the morning too. Shenan herself always has a hard time thinking and it seems like it's getting worse. I think (hope) it is just the extreme stress. I'm grateful she is close by for me to support her and help the grandkids. Guest guest
WOW! Bec, I just got some really unbelievable information off the site you sent me to. The unexplained sudden laughing from some of the kids, different types of seizures, and the Lennox-Gestaut syndrome which really scares me now so I hope I'm not seeing what we're seeing in Riley with the behaviors and the learning problems getting worse, aggression, and all the rest. Guest guest
Hi , My daughter has been taking Keppra since last July with no ill effects.(She also has taken phenobarbitol for the past 3 1/2 yrs with multiple side effects) Her neuro did ask us at her last appt is she was irritable at all, that was a possible side effect of Keppra. If you would like more info on the meds, www.rxlist.com is a good place to start. Good luck! e, Chelsea's mom(nonspecific mito)

Guest guest
, I got this post and the one where you said she got irritable. Thanks. I'll tell my daughter Shenan. How are you doing? What did the nurse or doctor say about spitting up the brown and black stuff and what did they do about it?
