Guest guest
Ask The Experts! Question Regarding:Treatment of Pancreas Divisum -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Viewers Question When should pancreatic duct stenting be used and why? are there any other types of treatments ? what about pancreas transplant? I have already had 3 ercps and stenting is next but only temporary for 2 months, will this work? any suggestions??/ -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Doctors Answer The pancreatic duct is a duct (tube) that conducts fluid formed by the pancreas to the intestine. Enzymes in the fluid assist with digestion of food within the intestine. Blockage of the duct prevents pancreatic fluid from entering the intestine and also causes inflammation within the pancreas (pancreatitis). Pancreas divisum is a condition in which the pancreatic duct has two openings into the intestine, one of which is narrowed (essentially a blockage) and responsible for the pancreatitis. One treatment for this condition is pancreatic duct stenting (placing a hollow tube across the narrowing to relieve the obstruction). Pancreatitis can be treated surgically, though such surgery is considered " major " and carries a relatively high risk for complications. Pancreatic transplantation is possible; however, transplantation can restore the endocrine function (e.g., hormone production) but not the digestive function of the pancreas. Mark E.
