Guest guest
We totally lucked out. Originiallly they thought that we'd be in the eye. When it shifted landfall from tampa bay to charlotte it changed the path just a bit. We missed the bad stuff by about 30miles to the east. Our electric (obviously) is still up, all we lost was our satellite tv. We boarded up the windows & all & the closest we got to needing them was a tornado touching down about 14 min away. My dad just called me freaking out because apparently the newscasters up north are saying (he lives in va) that deputies are gauding bodies in piles or some such. I think maybe they might be exagerating since I've only heard of three so far, in puna gorda. I'm not saying there are not more deceased than that but that the news here is not making it sound like some major bloodbath. sure could have been worse here. (Phew!) Now I guess we have to worry about everyone up north when whats left goes through. Christy? YOu ok. Crap, I just heard that there is another strong storm system picking up in Tampa. They say we are under a slash flood warning today. I think I'm gonna go back to bed. Guest guest
Yeah, I hear three confirmed dead so far if its the same place. power lines all over the place & trees too so emt's are having a hard time getting through. Its in Punta Gorda. I can't understand the rationale that lets people stay in mobile home parts when they tell everyone in them to go to the shelters. They had the progression wrong but they new the storms path had changed by yesterday at nine am. Guest guest
Glad you're ok. Guest guest
Nope, the dogs were kind of weirded out when we started boarding up windows & taking all our stuff to the basement. Noithing for them to sense other than that....the storm missed us by at least 30 miles. We have some leaves torn up on the lawn & thats about it. Everyone in Tampa is whining about having spent hundreds of dollars to come inland & spend then night hiding in the bathroom...lol. Oh well, weather forecasting is not an exact science. I WAS amazed at how they started using some new type of radar yesterday evening on the storm....they would say & Now Storm band one is going through Tavarres, will be in Blah, blah, blah at 8:05. Sure enough, they'd switch on street cams in whatever town it was & the wind would start whipping at exactly that time! Very neat! I remember that news coverage was nothing like that when we used to have storms in norfolk back in 96. There is not doubt though, if that storm had come in at Tampa we'd be under major destruction right now. Since it came ashor at Fort Myers it had time to dissipate some. Tampa is only an hour & a half drive from here...I think we woulda been toast. My aunt & uncle in Fort myers are pretty sure they lost everything, that their home is under water. they live on that strip of land (sand really) that the news said had a bad surge, west part of fort myers. My aunt Betty over in New Smyrna is ok but has a few trees torn to bits in her front yard. Thankfully none went through the house or anything. They have no power though & no clue when they will get it back & there are water problems too. My uncle brian (which is where the aunt & uncle who lost their home went) has no power but their house was new & very hurricane sturdy. They live in Fort meyers too. Meanwhile there is a nasty storm here right now. Daresay it will pass in a few minutes though. DawnShirley wrote: Glad you're ok. Guest guest
Jane, glad you were mostly missed. I think we're expecting about 5-10 inches of rain with high winds, etc, later this week or something, but of course we know they can't be sure. Heck they predicted that Charley would make landfall at Tampa, LOL....ooops! My brother and s-i-l are headed to Florida...actually I gues they might be there already, I haven't heard from Mom yet today. Yesterday AM they were in North Carolina somewhere. It think it is Port Charlotte or something like that, where they are headed. They aren't on vacation, a friend of my brother's owns a fire safety company and his business has taken off so much over the last five years that he wants a partner, and one he can trust. He has worked with my brother before and likes his management style. So they're going there and staying until October or so for my brother to learn the ropes and make up his mind. If he decides that's what he's doing, then they will sell their house up here and move there. I'm a little leary of him being so far away because his main support system is family, but Walt is a good friend and will make a good support system. We're hoping that before they move down there my s-i-l will make peace with the family so we can visit. She's ill, so we don't expect to her to offer any apologies, we'd just like to start anew and be at least pleasant. I'm thinking that a fresh start in a new area away from both families might be very good for both of them. They renewed their vows on their anniversary last week...just the two of them and the minister...so that's a good thing. Not something that I would find necessary because as Denny says "How many time do you have to promise something?" LOL, and neither of them cheated or anything ....well, not sexually, my brother was sneaking his gambling and drinking and she was sneaking her financial stuff too, so maybe they added that stuff to their vows, who knows? Guest guest
I don't know what news your Dad was listening to, but in our area they just said three confirmed dead with possible others as they sift through the debrise (I know that's spell wrong, but I tried several spellings and I'm having one of those days, LOL). They showed one guy talking who found this guy in a wheelchair and his wife dead in the wreck of his mobile home, but mostly the news in our area has been stressing how lucky and surprising it is that not more were killed. We've had alot of tornadoes around here this year...we used to very rarely get any. And we've had so much rain the last two springs and summers it's unbelievable. Now we're expecting quite a bit from this hurricane, too. Glad it missed you! I knew they were saying it was headed your way and I was worried. Kathy Re: Hurricane Charley We totally lucked out. Guest guest
I read the same title he did yesterday on Yahoo news & my gram heard it on her local news station too. I think they were just sensationalizing it all because at that time they had no real idea how many dead they were & the first news that came to light was that mobile home park in punta gorda. dawnKathy wrote: I don't know what news your Dad was listening to, but in our area they just said three confirmed dead with possible others as they sift through the debrise (I know that's spell wrong, but I tried several spellings and I'm having one of those days, LOL). Guest guest
Glad you had a "miss" from Charley. This storm acted so differently than any that I've ever been in and I've been through several category 3's (and I thing there was a 4 in there too) coming ashore in NC and the inability of the forecasters to tell where they were going to hit...several times I've gone to bed thinking they were we were in the line of getting a straight hit and we would just say it's in God's hands. Somewhere along the way it would make a shift and make a strike 30 or 40 miles East or West or where we were and that amount of distance would make such a huge difference in the amount of damage. We have friends in Bradenton that I need to check on. I'm not sure if I have their latest phone numbers but I have their emails and their son's so I can get to them that way. This storm yielded so much devastation that it is unbelievable that more people were killed. Last total I head was 16.
