Do you check blood ketones and blood glucose??

Excessive thirst and " unsteadiness " can be directly related to these levels

If you do not have these monitors--ask your Neuro to check them

Good luck

Congratulations with seizure control

Diane,

Are the zero calorie drinks water or do they contain some form of sweetner?

Excessive amounts of artificial sweetner with drinks have been known to

cause physical problems for some people which resolved with the

discontinuation of the drink.

We have ran into an interesting problem. Kya has been on the diet for three

weeks now. She is completely off all her meds and seizure free. The program

here at Denver Children's does not restrict fluids. So we have let her drink

zero

calorie drinks whenever she wants. Well, for the last four to five days she

just wants to drink and drink. For two days now she has been incredibly

cranky,

sleeping poorly and her balance is getting a little shaky. She is eating her

meals wonderfully. The things we have seen for the last two days are just

like

she was pre diet, only minus the seizures. Do any of you think there is a

connection to her fluids and current state? Appreciate the thoughts.

I really doubt Kya would be able to drink enough to cause this problem but

too much water can cause neurological problems in anyone. I believe it is very

difficult to drink that much under normal conditions, but it is possible. I

think a diet low in salt makes it more possible. The body has too much water

for the amount of salt it has, then brain cells can absorb too much water and

swell. At least that is the basic idea. But again it is hard to drink too much

water.

We have found that too much fluid over several days can cause problems

with . We test Specific Gravity as well as Ketones and if it

gets too high we will see activity that if not gotten under control she

will have seizures.

You said " zero calorie " drinks??? This is not just water you're talking about?

I think there is a big difference. Are you using drinks sweetened with

Nutrasweet (aspartame)? If so...... SERIOUSLY consider cutting them out and

using a different sweetener (stevia, or even saccharin would be better).

Nutrasweet is a neurotoxin..... and a seizure trigger for many. Even people who

do not have epilepsy have had seizures induced by aspartame!! Go to

www.google.com and type in " aspartame dangers " . The FDA may say this is a

harmless sweetener.... but I personally would never, ever allow it to cross my

child's lips..... or my own! This may not be a fluid issue at all..... but

related to the sweetener. If the drinks are diet sodas, they also contain lots

of sodium and other chemicals that will make her more and more thirsty. Another

thing to consider would be how long it has been since the last dose of meds.

Sometimes these take longer to work completely out of the system than you might

think.

According to this facility's dietician; fluids are restricted to keep

the body dehyrated. He's living proof; at this time, he's receving

to much fluids and his levels are totally off.

I also agree with the recent reply; is the blood sugar too high?
