Guest guest
The only foods she will eat are the hot dog, eggs, bologna, cheese, strawberries (or other fruit) and oil and cream. She did have a stool culture done on Tues, but that still isn't back yet. Re: Help-Severe stomach pain!!!!! It sounds like an illness, virus, flu, something. Many keto kids go once every few days. Or it could be a food intolerance. What foods are you using? Bill Keri Bitman wrote: > I know constipation is a side effect of the diet, but I truely do > not think this is constipation. Guest guest
Actually it could be constipation, I have heard of kids being impacted and only the watery stuff comes out. Sorry, know that sounds gross. First thing to figure out is if it is constipation. The constipation itself can increase seizures. If it is, more Milk of Magnesia might help as a temporary fix (make sure its Original flavour, its the only thats keto friendly). If its not constipation, then my suggestion would be digestive enzymes, might be really bad gas Keri Bitman wrote: > I know constipation is a side effect of the diet, but I truely do > not think this is constipation. Guest guest
Hot dogs and bologna are poor nutrition choices, but I know how kids are. Chicken or fish would be better. Some people can't eat strawberries. What kind of oil are you using. It could be a food thing. Guest guest
Any chance your daughter's stools are too soft to push comfortably? My daughter has a much more comfortable and successful time with her stools when she takes psyllium to bulk up the stool. I let it sit in her formula (g-tube) for the entire meal (~30 min) to let it soak up as much water as it will so it is not drawing water from her intestines. She takes a 500mg capsule 1x/daily, 2x/daily if necessary. I agree that you want to make sure through her doc that there is nothing physically wrong--sounds like you are doing exactly that. You would certainly want to do that before adding something like psyllium. Gut pain can be excruciating, so your little one and you have my sympathy! Guest guest
Keri, Here’s my thoughts. If the stool tests positive for blood (a 2 second test that the lab should have results on by now) then that is an indicator of a possible hemorroid or some type of ulcer or tear. That in itself can definitely cause a lot of pain with each bowl movement. Often the stool will be a very dark brown and possibly foul smelling. Some other ideas is that she may be producing a lot of gas for various reasons that could be causing her stomach/abdominal region to become very tense and painful. When you say her stool is “pasty” is that the texture? It it very foul smelling? Her stool should be brown in color. If it is chalky then that is a strong indicator of poor digestion. In the first month of the diet our daughter delt with extreme bloating and pain. Her stool was chalky initially and very foul smelling. We started her on digestive enzymes and the gas nearly resolved and the color changed to near normal. But she still had a really soft stool with some undigested food and foul smell. This improved with eliminating cream. We did not make the connection with lactose intolerance until a year later when we were giving her a lot of yogurt and “ice cream” and the very solf strange foul smelling stool returned. We now treat her as lactose intolerant and her energy, seizures, and everything has improved. She’s also now off the digestive enzymes and tolerating it great. Rhonda I know constipation is a side effect of the diet, but I truely do not think this is constipation. Ok here we go- Everytime my daughter starts to have a bowel movement she screams, cries, real tears, the whole bit. This just started Monday and we have been on the diet 3 weeks. For about 1 hour surrounding the time of the bowel movement she just cries and is in pain. she can not talk yet (2 1/2yr old), but I can tell that her tush is really hurting her ie: she won't sit down, won't let us wipe/touch her etc. After her last bowel movement she was lying on me and I could feel her stomach tightening up (this was a good 45 mins after I had changed her diaper). The reason I don't think it is constipation is because eventhough she is in pain while she is having bowel movement, she is going three-four times a day and they are not hard, kind of pasty, maybe a little watery, but not diaherra. I have given her milk of mag twice in the past 24 hours. No blood that I have seen. This again started Monday and since then her ketones have been small and seizure activity increased. We have changed nothing other than on Monday we took away 25 mg of topamax (in the middle of a wean). I got her into the a GI tomorrow morning. any thoughts????
