my sons lab reported, he has low monocytes (2.7) he is almost 4.

they were normal (6.4)months ago. his lymphocytes were high (51.0)

and now normal range (42.6). also, high platelet count (463) and

now (328) what do ya think? is there any supplements that raise

wbc's?? should i have him test for anything viral or bacteria?

thanks, angelique

Hi, the differential on a complete blood count can be confusing and

is not as useful as a snap shot but is more useful as a trend by

following what happens over a peroid of time. Usually high

neutrophils imply a bacterial infection, whereas high lymphocytes and

monocytes imply a viral infections, high eosinophils are usually

parasites or allergies. The problem is that they are not specific for

a specific process and without following the trend you don't know if

the process is in the recovery phase or what. My guess of your sons

CBC is that he had a viral infection months ago and he has now

recovered. The lymphocytes being normal are more important than the

monocytes, in adults it is not unusual to have low moncytes. What was

the reference range (high and low) reported with the CBC? Bottomline

if your son appears well right now I wouldn't be to concerned about

the moncytes
