Guest guest
Hi Cleo: My nausea went away almost immediately and I rapidly gained weight so that by 6 months after diagnosis I could no longer wear the size clothing I had worn nearly all of my adult life. I am now about 25 lbs heavier than ever in my life and struggling to take the weight off. Hi Lizz, Thanks to you too for your response. May I ask what your blood markers were if you have them I would like to compare with mine if possible? How long since your diagnosis? I have had this nausea/anemia on and off and what I now know as hiatus hernia symptoms for a considerable time. I guess I shouldn't expect to be leaping over the moon just yet maybe!? Did anyone experience any great change in their weight after diagnosis, one way or another?take care. Guest guest
I'm not one to weigh myself (I don't even own one) so I have to go by the doctors office scale. About 3 months after my diagnosis I recieved numerous comments about looking like I had lost a lot of weight. My clothes fit different but I didn't really think I'd lost that much weight. But again I don't weigh myself and since being GF I've felt great and haven't been to the doctors. I was also diagnosed after having a second baby so that may explain the comments!!!! I'm also in Michigan so if you want to email off the group, I might have some local resources to share! Guest guest
I am just shy of the 2 year anniv. of my GF diagnosis.. Donna, you aren't alone with the weight battle.. I am up as well. I am wondering if it is ever going to come off.. Guest guest
Hi Donna! Well I am very sorry to hear you are having problems like that. Had you been experiencing the symptoms for long prior to diagnosis? I met someone in a restaurant the other day, and he said he lost 40 lbs watching the gluten. Well, now I hear your story - I don't get it at all, It seems like he cooks fresh a lot although I didn't get to speak with him for long as he was working there that evening, Cleo Re: How long till some 'recovery'?> It is a very individual thing but after going fully gluten-free > (and > that often takes awhile to parse), most people have at least some > immediate relief. Guest guest
I don't get it either except that my small intestine must really be healing! I eat almost everything fresh, very little to no packaged food and no gf treats to speak of. I had severe symptoms for the year prior to diagnosis (lost nearly 30 lbs in that year) and had mild unnoticeable symptoms for many year prior to that, that I now know were caused by CD. Could be a combination of slower metabolism with age (mid 40s), loss of muscle when I was dropping weight the year before diagnosis, increased portions of meat and veggies to make up for the lost bread, etc. As my nutritionist likes to say, still is calories in and calories out. Just frustrating. By the way, my TTG was 250 at diagnosis. The highest my GI said she has ever seen. I am approaching the end of my second year gf and haven't been retested in a while. Last time it was at 71. Still high but I understand it takes awhile for the numbers to go back to normal. -Donna Donna M. White, Esq. Guest guest
I understand your frustrations Donna. I didn't think/had hoped vegetables didn't have many calories... ( I cannot understand how my weight didn't go down. I think I had the puffiness instead, bloated stomach etc. It's tough, but we can do it.. keep at it. I am going to dig out my blood readings later.. I hope I put them somewhere obvious??? You take care, k? Guest guest
Hi Cleo - Some people do lose weight. There are alot of variables though. When my tests revealed fat malabsorption (before going GF), I knew new weight battles were sure to be on the horizon. The downside of a healed small intestine! Guest guest
I had the same thing. I developed my celiac symptoms while pregnant. Afterwards I thought all my symptoms were just the result of pregnancy disturbing my *innards*. Lots of gas and I was a lot bigger - especially in the abdomen. Turns out the gas was from eating gluten. My abdomen was completely bloated, and stuck out much further than it would have because my muscles had been stretched from pregnancy. Also, my ankles and face and neck were all bloated. So when I went GF, within two days my abdomen, ankles, face and neck were all much smaller - but, alas, no change on the scale. I also have had strange changes, like my feet aren't as dry as they used to be. My heels used to be so dry I could pound a nail with them! I'm not doing anything differently except being GF, and now they hardly have any callous at all! And I had a strange bump on my leg - had it for years and the doctor wasn't worried about it unless it got bigger - it's shrinking! I am constantly amazed at how many different reactions there are to food allergies. Guest guest
WOW Trudy, that is some change lady! Wonderful that you are noticeably better... but don't go pounding too many nails anymore with your heals.. OUCH!!! Cleo in MI Re: How long till some 'recovery'? I had the same thing.
