The nerve that carries taste from the anterior (outermost) 2/3 of the

tongue is called the Chorda tympani nerve.

The nerve enters the skull near the ear canal and travels through the

temporal bone not far from the auditory nerve. (Hence the name chorda

" string " tympani " ear drum " )
