Guest guest
, I know it sounds pretty basic but we increase 's water and if that doesn't work give him prune juice. (both through the g-tube) We give about 1/2 the little cans of prune juice and haven't had to give the other half yet. The biggest thing is the water. Guest guest
, In January, I took in for urination troubles. She was PT before She started school but was having trouble with both urination and BM's and her dr thought she might be " consipated " . She put her on Miralax. We used it for about 3 weeks with no improvement. I began to believe that the urine/BM issues... smell and rash all have to do with elavated levels so I D/C the Miralax. Miralax didn't seem to effect her as some laxitives might. She didn't have cramping, etc... It might work for brigitte. It's always worth a shot. Dorothy P.S. I added 1/2 a lid full of the Miralax to a cup of twangy OJ drink... More like Sunny Delight. She drank it right up... without any trouble. You might have to hide it...( won't take meds any other way... Had to go to suppositories for fevers.) > hi does any of your kids have trouble with bowel movements? if so what do you do for them? we finally got brigitte to go but i hate to keep using a enima on her. that seems to be the only way she can go lately and i can't get her in to see dr walsh. any ideas? thanks karen

She has actually been impacted in the past. I have her on a steady diet of MOM 1 tsp. every other day. Oringinally it was every day but this began to give her diarrhea, so I switched it to every other. It seems to work for her. Guest guest
Several of the boys in our family have always had trouble with constipation and also very large stools, so large we wonder how they pass them. They are not always constipated stools either. Does anyone know what causes the large stools and what can we do to help that? Is it bowel immotility (is that the correct phrase?) that causes these problems? When you are a little boy it can make life miserable and so embarrassing. Kody also has the bad rashes and the ADHD so is it to do with the Omega fatty acid thing? I really want to help him. Grandma Re: constipation , In January, I took in for urination troubles. Guest guest
so large we wonder how they pass them. They are not always constipated stools either. Does anyone know what causes the large stools and what can we do to help that? Yes, this is a common problem with mito kids...it can be either an autonomic issue or it can be caused by low muscle tone...it is called gut dysmotility. 's are so big we have had to call a plumber b/c they have clogged the toilet but they are generally soft, which seems contrary to constipation. He still has one of those every day or two. Dr Korson says that Carnitor should help altho Carnitor didn't do anything for us (for any problems--cocktail was unsuccessful) so maybe you could try this? deb
Guest guest
, One of the other parents wrote a while back that their child's doctor told them the large stools are because the muscles in the intestine were not working correctly or well to compact the stool. If it happens to we just joke to him that he pooped enough for two people and both of them were grown ups. It gives him the giggles - 9 year olds are into that gross bady function humor. Twana know what causes the large stools and what can we do to help that?
Guest guest
My son, who is 4 is pretty profoundly affected in his intestines. I guess all Mitochondrial patients are more or less affected in different areas. Caden's big deal is his intestinal motility. Carnitor is THE best thing we have ever found for him! His motility problems ceased with the use of Carnitor! Although, his stools are still quite large, especially for a 4 yr old but at least he functions. Even though he takes Carnitor, this doesn't stop the psuedo obstrucstions he gets during a viral illness. Any kind of stress on his body affects his intestines. It's very hard and slow to get them moving again. He is currently off his his Carnitor (for 1 month!!) for some lab work he has to have next week. It took nearly a full 4 weeks for his problems to come back but THEY HAVE! We are having a terrible time with him and are about ready to give up on getting his labs drew. He's due to get them drawn on the 6th but it seems like forever when your child has such severe stomach pain and you are having to do enemas! It breaks my heart. I am pregnant and with most pregnant women, I have experienced some degree of constipation. It makes you feel TERRIBLE all over. Just a kinda nervous, jittery, aggravated, unclean feeling. I cannot imagine how he must feel inside. He was just in the hospital in Jan.with a very long bout of psuedo obstruction. Nothing worked until they done the ng tube with Go Lytly(spelling??). That finally worked and then we kept him on Metamucil for a month or so. He was doing fine until we stopped his Carnitor. It has helped him in so many areas, not just the motility. We are very anxious to get him back on it. Anyone else have these kinds of results? Krystena s Caden 4.9yrs GAII Re: constipation , In January, I took in for urination troubles. Guest guest
This is all very helpful. I forgot someone mentioned using carnitine for the bowel issues some time back and since my daughter (his aunt) benefits so much from it I'll see if I can find the money to try Kody on it as soon as possible. Even though the prescription stuff didn't work for her I could try that for him right away since I have insurance. If it doesn't work, then I'll get the brand she has for him. I think we tried Miralax and the Dr. guaranteed it would work, but it didn't so we ended up at the gastroenterologist. A week of mineral oil finally helped for that time. Tomorrow I'll start him on some type of carnitine! Re: constipation , In January, I took in for urination troubles. Guest guest
, Ellen is right on this one. I too tend to go through periods of constipation. But once I up my water (not soda) intake it seems to do the trick. For fast relief, and I'm not suggesting this to anyone, for me all I need to do is eat about two table spoons of ice cream and in about an hour I have results. This is probably part of dumping, but I do not get symptoms like those of some I have read and heard about, thankfully. Good luck in getting the plumbing ironed out. -Ray > , > > I am 6 weeks out and have had some problems with constipation. The > cure.....64 ozs of water everyday! Guest guest
, how far out are you? I'm 6 weeks post op myself and having a terrible time getting my water in. I'd like to know how you manage to get 8-10 glasses in! Given that I'm not supposed to drink 30 min prior to a meal, the 30 min of the meal, and 30 min after the meal, that's 4 1/2 hours right there. I usually have a snack or a protein shake sometime in the day, so that adds at least another 90 min where I can't drink...other than getting up in the middle of the night, I can't seem to figure out how to get all this water in by sip-sip-sipping in the time I have. What is working for you? Thanks for your help, Kelley RNY 5/12/04 374/328/175 cathysthecook wrote: > Thanks to those who offered advice. I do drink 8-10 glasses of water > a day. Guest guest
Somedays I have a hard time too. I haven't had my surgery, but I am getting prepared for how life will be like after surgery. At first I brought a gallon jog of water and told myself I have to drink at least that during the day. Seeing that huge jug on my desk at work was hard and I had a difficult time drinking even half of it. So, what I did was buy 20 oz bottled water. I figure if I drink three of them during work I'm extremely close to drink a gallon of water. We basically have most of the air conditioning off at work because (all the thin people) are cold all the time. So they close the vents. The number of overweight people in our department are 6 and the rest of us have to bring in fans to keep cooler. So, for me it's become extremely easy to drink all that water because I am constantly thirsty. Today, I have drank at least 4 - 20 oz waters, 2 - 20 oz watered down Crystal Light Pink Lemonade and one protein shake. I feel like Orca the whale! But I am drinking my water.
