Hello, I have really enjoyed reading the posts here and I am glad to

be joining you. My dh and I have adopted my grandaughter and she has

been with us for a year now. She is six years old and was late

identified as being deaf, even though we went to numerous doctors and

were told crazy things like we were spoiling her, or she obviously

not mentally retarded so therefore she couldn't be deaf. After she

was identified at about 2 1/2 years of age we were told not to teach

her any sign or they would not give her a Cochlear Implant. She was

Implanted after she turned 3 years old. So after that her mother

became involved in drugs and she was neglected for about 1 1/2

years. We have also come to find out ( we moved to another town when

she was about 2 year old) that she has not really worn her implant at

all during this time, so she really has only had the last year to

benifit from her implant. So, all of that to say that I have a little

one who just turned six who has had no real means of communication

other that poking and pointing for her whole life. She is just

beginning to use the signs that she knows. She is non verbal, but she

is beginning to make some sounds and trying to minic what is said to

her. I am looking for sign language videos that show a picture of the

object that is being signed like the sign for car while a picture of

a car was being shown. I have been searching but I have not found

anything yet. Does anyone know of any out there?

Thanks,

Sharon
