Since diabetes is so different for each of us, she probably will still have to modify the food plan that is given to her. There are a lot of websites. The ADA has a website. My favorite website is the Joslin Diabetes Center. No website is perfect for everyone. We each learn what works best for us. Your friend's glucose meter is going to be the best judge of what she can and cannot eat. Some people can eat more carbs than others. Some people do low-carbs, while others eat most anything they want but in moderation. She should stay away from potatoes, rice, white bread, etc until she finds out how these will affect her bg's (blood glucose). Writing down what she eats, the amount, her level of exercise/activity after eating and her bg readings 2 hours after eating will be very beneficial in learning what she can and cannot eat. Don't stress about this. Diabetes did not happen overnight. I think you will feel much more comfortable once you and your friend go through the diabetes education classes. There is a lot of information about diabetes. Don't let it overwhelm either of you. Take one day at a time. hugs Eunice
Guest guest
Go to the library and get Dr. Bernstein's book, Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution. Get the new one that was published in 2003, not the old one from 1997. It'll tell you everything you need to know and how to avoid some really bad complications of diabetes. All the best, New 2 Diabetes! Hello group! My girlfriend just found out that she has diabetes and thats about it so far! They want to do a liver ultra sound on wed to check that out and then back to the dr the following wed. She has to take oral meds for now to see if they can get that under control first. They are suppose to set us up for a all day class for us to learn more about it but I want to start going full force now and I am kinda lost on where and what to do! I guess my first question is could ppl send us some websites that has been helpful to them? I dont need WHAT IS THIS DISEASE websites just sites to help out with what to and not to eat, etc. I am going to start researching this but my aunt who has this as well told me that joining a group would be a lot of support and so here I am! Thanks to everyone to taking the time to read this! Guest guest
Yes, I have both books and they are great. If I could only purchase one though, I'd get the 2003 version of the Dr. Bernsteins Diabetes Solution. Using his techniques (AND not strictly either), I have managed to drop my 14 day average from 114 to 95 after just a week of his version. I'm hoping to get my average even lower as I want to keep my BS as close to normal as possible. Normal for a nondiabetic being 85. I wouldn't recommend this kind of BS control for everyone. However, I don't take meds & I still have pancreas function and my BS responds quickly to walking. For example, yesterday I had fasting BS of 88 and my BS after lunch was 112. Today, I had fasting BS of 85, I walked before lunch and my BS after lunch was 74. My body will bring that up to the 80s in an hour or so without my eating anything. Using Dr. Bernstein's advice (but not strict as I will have fried chicken or broccoli casserole that has carbs in it-- just no bread or high glycemic carb vegies), I have managed last week to keep my BS in the 80 to 90 range. What is the difference between the two books? hugs Eunice
