wow, this is really interesting. I don't know anything about the

SCD diet, but I don't recall hearing this issue before.

Why are they illegal (by SCD rules)?

Are you sure it is alpha lipoic acid (not alpha linoleic acid,

an essential fatty acid) that is illegal?

Can you use juice? or concentrated juice (probably that is

" cheating " )? or fruit sauce? or unsweetened fruit jam?

good wishes,

As with many things, the SCD has taken on a religious aura.

Since it is talking about starving yeast, not about avoiding

allergies, some amount of the " bad stuff " is OK if it is a small

enough amount.

I don't know if the powdered vitamins are " small enough amount, " but

you could try it. or you could go on the diet and then start hunting

around for suitable supplmenets and introduce them as you find them or

run out of what you have.

>>>Since DMSA & ALA are " illegal " on the SCD diet, what do you use?

>>> Why are they illegal (by SCD rules)?

Because anything that promotes gut bugs is illegal by SCD. That

includes practically all chelators or semi-chelators or detoxing

agents as most can enhance gut bugs. The strategy is that once the

gut heals and proper nutrition is restored the body will naturally

detox itself. I think the metal detox issue hasn't come up much

before on SCD.

>>> Since sweeteners are not allowed, how to you get them to take it

when they cannot swallow a capsule?

SCD is not big on much extra supplements at all. You would have to

study it and see if it is something you want to do instead of other

avenues. I would be most interested in finding out the success rate

of those actually healed and returning to a typical wholesome diet.

Otherwise you are on another ultra-restrictive diet for a long, long

time.

>>> Can you use juice? or concentrated juice (probably that is

> " cheating " )? or fruit sauce? or unsweetened fruit jam?

Only a few selected juices.

Those people who ignore the religious dogma, restrict diet to those

foods on the SCD permitted list, continue to use supplements and

chelate seem to like the results just fine.

Of course the body is not going to detox itself of brain mercury no

matter what special diet you eat.

Also the SCD isn't terribly restrictive so it is possible to combine

it with other necessary diet restrictions and still have enough left

to eat you can honestly call it a diet instead of a punishment.

Yes, one of the big, big, BIIIIIG advantages of the SCD is that you

can have sweet things, just not all of them. But honey is fine and is

available in an enormous number of flavors if you look around.

Hey All,

I don't have time to read books right now. We've been GFCF for about 5

years now and chelating for 3. Can someone give me the short list of foods

you can and can't have on this diet and why it's supposed to be

Ok/better/worse than GFCF?

Thanks!

(or a website if that works! The point is--something brief-- since my son

and I are in the middle of Philosophy and Medieval History!)

We have not started SCD, but I have read the book and am strongly considering

it. We are now GFCF....The long and the short of it (without experience) is that

it allows some dairy (very well fermented yogurt (at least 24 hrs), farmers

cheese and some other diary products. However it removes all disaccharides

since these " carbs " escape digestion due to their complexity and feed microbes

that cause upset. These include potatoes, corn, rice and other " permitted "

foods under GFCF. Some attempt to do the SCD while remaining CF. As an aside -

we are also on the Feingold program.

Does anyone know why vinegar is allowed on the SCD diet.

Vinegar is not allowed on the GF diet (vinegar made from grains),

but the SCD diet says it is GF.

This seems insignificant, but it won't be to me.

Thanks,

Terry

Vinegar used to be considered unsafe for celiacs but now researchers

have found that it is actually safe. Lists that say it is not GF

have just not been updated with the latest research.

http://www.pecanbread.com/ , lots of links here,

http://www.newtreatments.org/scdiet.php3 , this site explains the

theory of the diet.
