It is classified as an antianxiety drug, however, the primary use is for it's central nervous system side effect of amnesia. Combined with Fentanyl, I could undergo any procedure and not remember a thing. I have found that few physicians willingly offer this to patients because it does require additional monitoring time. But, remember, you are the primary member of the health care team, which means that you make the decisions regarding your care. I would encourage anyone to request it, particularly for insertion of PIC or central lines. I tell the physician that as a Pancreatitis patient I suffer enough, when there is a known procedure to minimize painful procedures, I should have a right to receive it.
