If you use the dose on the bottle you'll be in the bathroom all day. I give my 53lb daughter 2ml a day. If she becomes constipated I increase to 5ml and that usually takes care of it. Guest guest
The only problem with the mag citrate bought in the store (the bottles of liquid) is that I was told that these do not 'last'-- their effectiveness begins to go down after a day of opening. What you may want to do is find some mag citrate in a health food store in a powdered form or Kirkman Labs sells a powdered mag citrate that we use-- www.kirkmanlabs.com Miralax is about as far from natural as one can get and I hope you find something that is effective. Miralax is polyethylene glycol 3350. Ethylene glycol is antifreeze. So this is a 'cousin' to antifreeze. Imagine what it is doing to the GI tract! Other things that may help are lots of vitamin C, n-acetyl- glucosamine, florabear, perfect stool formula, perfect stool formula parsley version, benefiber, molo-cure, smooth move tea, and occasional use of children's senokot (go to the max dose on the bottle if nothing happens after a single dose). We've been using mg citrate from walmart for yrs. I store it in the fridge for a couple weeks at a time. If we haven't used it all after 2 wks then I throw out the rest. Guest guest
My child's Gastro. Dr. wanted to put Josh on Miralax and I didn't like the idea at all. What I found instead is a product called Natural calm. It is Magnesium in powder form. This disolves nicely in juice and doesn't tatse bad. This works great. I can get you the name of the company if you want it. merrywbee wrote: > The only problem with the mag citrate bought in the store (the > bottles of liquid) is that I was told that these do not 'last'-- > their effectiveness begins to go down after a day of opening. Guest guest
Probiotics, magnesium citrate, fiber such as psyllium husk, senna in that order. Seems I remember Magnesium something being helpful... Magnesium, vitamin C, enzymes, other ideas. Rice, bananas, apples, and several other foods are constipating. As well as many supplements. You should try to find the cause of the constipation, so you can remove it. Here is Miralax info, you are wise to want to remove it http://www.danasview.net/miralax.htm Dana

Guest guest
Thanks - already do probiotics. Miralax said to work by having water pulled into the waste matter - is that how the magnesium works? Trying to avoid the cramping of some laxatives... Thanks! Laurie [ ] Re: constipation - options to Miralax? Probiotics, magnesium citrate, fiber such as psyllium husk, senna in that order. Guest guest
Hi - thanks for the advice.. I have a choice of health food stores near me that carry a lot of forward-thinking types of supplements! So yes, I'd love the company name. Laurie Re: [ ] Re: constipation - options to Miralax? Guest guest
Thanks for the input - yes, somewhere along the line I actually read the bottle of Miralax and thought " polyethylene glycol " sounded mysteriously like something for a car, not a child. Definitely throwing out that bottle now!! Laurie [ ] Re: constipation - options to Miralax? Guest guest
Thanks a lot! Especially info re: the dose - no one else mentioned that! Guest guest
Magnesium is essential to the body-- that's how it helps. It helps the colon do it's job naturally. There's LOTS of information on the internet as to constipation being a result of magnesium deficiency. Miralax on the other hand, is going to do absolutely nothing as far as treating the underlying cause of the constipation and may make things much worse for your child. The cramping is going to come with the territory at the beginning-- the overly stuffed colon does hurt when things begin to move through. In time, this should not be a problem at all. If you want something that helps hold water in the stool, consider lactulose or benefiber... but I really think you'll be better off by going with more natural substances to help treat the underlying cause of the problem. And look at metal toxicity as a possibility, too, because removal of metals can improve constipation too. W > Thanks - already do probiotics.
