Guest guest
OK... here's the scoop. I looked at the website and it says that all Diet Rite is sweetened with Splenda and Acesulfame-K. I have some cans of Raspberry that list aspartame as an ingredient and have the warning about PKU and phenylalinine. So I called the company. I was told that the cans I have are at least 2 years old because Diet Rite has not made drinks with aspartame in about two years. Nice, huh?? I bought them no more than a month ago. It was after we had been home from the hospital for at least a week, maybe two. Anyway, they are going back to the store. So... y'all are right. Diet Rite does have Splenda and not aspartame. I specifically asked our dietician about Splenda as a sweetner because I use it all the time. She didn't want us to use it right away because it is actually made from sugar (probably why it tastes pretty good). She said the jury is still out as to whether or not it is actually metabolized. The same goes for acesulfame-K. The little Splenda packets say they contain <1g. carb per pkt. I called the company about that and was told the actual carb. value per pkt is 0.7g. Aspartame is made with two different amino acids (protein). Our dietician said she has never had patients experience problems using it. However, some of her colleagues have reported rare problems. Evidently, aspartame rarely causes neurological problems such as migraines and visual disturbances. They think that maybe it could trigger seizures, too, in rare instances. Because our daughter was taken off her two meds pretty quickly, we didn't use Splenda at all for the first month. Didn't want any add'l variables to deal with. This week I have used it but I calculate it into her diet. No problems. I'll do that next week too and then try using just one packet as a " free food " and see what happens. I don't expect any adverse reactions but it pays to go slow.
