Oh, the problem with answering this is that if I just anwser the question you will (very reasonably!) find the answer very scary and freakish. So then I feel like I have to write a big long commentary about it. And there are some differing views (as with most everything about chelation). The " specific risk " of ALA is that it CROSSES the BBB. It does not " remove mercury from the brain " . What it does is move mercury from where there is more to where there is less, between the blood and brain tissue. So, it is POSSIBLE that ALA could move mercury INTO the brain. This is thought to be VERY unlikely, except if you have had exposure to mercury in the prior few months. This is why it is recommended NOT to use ALA, AT ALL, within a few months of mercury exposure (including amalgam replacement). I'm sure there are more thorough and longer explanations somewhere. good wishes, Moria
