Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if anyone has done any research on the sealants that

they use when all 6 year old molars have errupted? I have been trying

to get info but can't seem to find any. I am concerned about what is

in them. If anyone has done reseach and has any info I would

appreciate some feedback. My granddaughter's appt is on October 8th.

Thanks Peggy

Hi Peggy,

They are completely unnecessary. The surface of the enamel has to be " sanded "

to make the sealant adhere to the tooth. And they often fall off anyway. So

you're left with a molar with damaged enamel which is more prone to decay.

The material in dental sealants is a liquid resin (plastic) that is light

cured to harden in the grooves of the teeth and seal out decay. They

release small amounts of a substance that mimics estrogen (as most plastics

do) and some of them are made to release fluoride. They are not as widely

used as they once were with the advent of " microdentistry " . Their success

rate is only about 60%. I use a laser cavity detector and do tiny fillings

when required rather than seal all teeth, but I do use them in some kids.

When the sealants leak you can have big cavities form underneath the leaky

sealant. I am a mercury and other toxin-free dentist and mother of a 7

year-old autistic son on the road to recovery.

Hope this helps, Siddall DDS

Hi ,

Thank you so much for the info. I do think I will pass on the

sealants now that I know waht is in them. I'm not too concerned about

decay since my granddaughter (8.5yrs) who is Aspergers is a bit

compulsive about her oral hygene. I guess this is a good thing.LOL

She brushes twice a day (even her tongue) and has started to brush

her teeth in school after lunch. I just got a post from someone on

anoterh group who's son had the sealants done and within six months

he had 23 cavities. Being an old dental assistant my guess it they

were not done properly. I don't think I'll do them now. Thank you

again so much for the info. Know any alternative dentists in North

Shore area of Massachusetts?

What is " microdentistry " and how does that replace sealants? My son has a lot

of dental problems and our dentist use sealants on half a dozen of his teeth.

It was an awful procedure for a highly sensitive child. I would really like to

know a better, alternative, treatment. Thanks!
