Ear infections and LA

ditto on being glad we're over ear infections in our household too! Interesting

- our oldest (Tommy) had a really bad run of ear infections from about 6-8

months until he was maybe 18 months or so. That was long before hearing aids

for him. Our younger son hardly had ear infections at all. I think it is

something that kids often grow out of - their ear canal becomes larger, etc.

But can't imagine hearing aids would help either having the ear somewhat moist,

etc.

Elaine - we lived in New Orleans for 17 years - now we're in New Hampshire.

Certainly for us, educationally NH has been a much easier place to be,

especially with kids with special needs. We moved to NH before we knew about

the boys (actually, Sam wasn't thought of when we moved here!) but it's been a

good match. We do however miss the food down south - we always say the food up

here is overpriced and underspiced! We have Mardi Gras party every year - our

friend in NOLA sends us tons of beads and cups, etc. - and another friend who

moved here from NOLA mail orders from cajunchef.com crawfish etouffe, gumbo - so

it's at least a taste!

Take care- happy new year everybody!

Ugh, I am SO GLAD the days of constant ear infections are OVER in my household.

I am convinced that wearing hearing aids, and having those ear molds in a childs

ear, contributes to infections as well. My son never had one until he got his

aids. My other son never really got them. I think he may have had one.

One thing to be aware of is that in most cases antibiotics do not help clear up

an ear infection. There are cases where they are necessary, but most often they

are not and just require time and sleep and fluids, the usual. There are some

alternative therapies out there, though I am not sure if they work either!

My ENT said that unless the child has a high fever or is in severe pain there is

no need for antibiotics. I am sure other ENTS have different criteria. When I

asked why most of the time Dr's prescribed antibiotics to cure an ear infection

if it doesn't usually help, he said because parents usually want it. Ok, so

who's the Doctor here??? I guess they feel a lot of pressure to DO SOMETHING

and antibiotics are a quick easy answer. Which would be fine if it didn't then

hurt your child's natural ability to fight off ear infections in the future, and

contribute to more powerful strains becoming prevalant.
