Guest guest
Well, unfortunately they never determined whether I do or dont have AIH. They took blood tests which showed positive ANA and smooth muscle and elevated enzymes. However, the ANA and smooth muscle is only markers for AIH and the high enzymes could have been a toxic effect from drugs I was taking. I had a biopsy which showed mild inflammation. When my enzymes went back to normal, the doctor said that i may just have AIH, which is inactive at the moment. AIH is not the only disease which people have positive ANA and Smooth muscle antibodies. People with lupus also have those antibodies. I guess what Im saying is that the doctors and I dont know whether I had, whether I have, or whether im going to get AIH. Oh boy! Im just luck im well now I guess! --- DETOXPJ@... wrote: > Eleanor what tests did they do to determine that you > did not have aih? im in > that process now . i have not had my bx yet[nor do i > care to ha ha ] its > terrible , the waiting isen it? glad to hear your o > k god bless newcomer > Peggy > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------ > Please support the American Liver Foundation! > > 1.) Guest guest
There is a specific test for lupus which I have always (thank God, not complaining!) failed. Did they run that one? What drugs were you taking that " they " attribute everything to? Guest guest
Elena, Did you see a hepatologist? Have you been to a major medical university? I would if you haven't, just to be sure... Hopefully, it was a fluke and you are ok. Hugs, (AIH?PSC?)

Guest guest
Hi Elena, Positive ANA doesn't mean much by itself. Most autoimmune diseases present with positive ANA. An important question is how positive and what kind of pattern? Anti Smooth Muscle is fairly specific to AIH, though is seen in other autoimmune diseases. It can occur in Lupus, but is not very common. There are many other antibodies that are fairly common in Lupus, but unfortunately none that are specific only to Lupus. That is what makes the Dx of autoimmune diseases so difficult. There is no one test that can say conclusively that you do or do not have a certain disease. The docs have to look at the collection of symptoms and tests to make the diagnosis. In the early stages, this can be very difficult, since there are so many overlapping symptoms and test results. I was Dx'd for a time with Lupus, and have done a ton of research, if you'd like additional info. The docs are now in agreement that I don't have Lupus, so even once you have a Dx, it can change. Guest guest
There are many tests. ANA is one..there is a test called the AnaLyzer.. its a panel of different types of autoimmune factors. Its the first step I believe. I also think that there isnt just one test that says " yes you have lupus " I dont have the systemic lupus eyruthemis (SP) but I do have a lupoid syndrom. No one can seem to pin-point anything for sure. Im sure there are tons of Lupus sites online that can give you more info..good luck Jody --- La7de@... wrote: > Kay K, > What is the specific test for Lupus? > > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------ > Please support the American Liver Foundation! > > 1.) Guest guest
Hi Audrey, That is so interesting....Although I cant understand it! You told us that you have now got cirrhosis. Now, from what I understand inflammation of the liver causes this. When you have inflammation of the liver, I thought this shows in your bloodwork as elevated AST and/or ALT. Did you have these tests prior to you having Cirrhosis? Were your LFTs elevated prior to getting cirrhosis? I think that once you have cirrhosis your LFT are not necessarily elevated. (?) Bearing all this in mind, I remember reading something about a certain thing affecting the LFTs results, I cant remember exactly what that is. Again, that is amazing/scary that you had no signs or positive tests prior to getting cirrhosis! Elena Audrey <aab1@...> wrote: I've never had abnormal blood work my whole life.
