Guest guest
Hi my name is Diane and i have a 4yr old daughter Olivia .. Who was born with meningitis and recieved an unknown amount of antibiotics. She has been tested.. and we were told she has Unilateral hearing loss.. in her right ear. starting at .30db's normal hearing in the left. but we see " hearing problems " doctors say she shouldnt have... and we are instructed to come back every 3months to find a cause. IF nothing changes then we will go back every six months or even once a year. I would like to know who has been through this.. and what happen.. Any Ideas are welcomed.. for i am lost... And if anyone is from Delaware.. so.. i we are able to have a 1 to 1 contact .. maybe someone could assit me in the visits.. and ask things i would have no clue about.. and explain to me if i dont understand... Guest guest
Im guessing the basic.. audio tests... 2 of them one indicated possible inner ear problem then when they did the second test it says middle ear.. but the .30db stayed the same. Also.. she has no fluid in the ear. and everything looks to be intact.. they just cant tell if anything is deformed. Audiologist recommended an Fm system..Ent disagrees. Guest guest
Hi Diane and welcome! I have the same questions Elaine posted. Also, did they just recently identify these problems? Did they test her hearing after birth/after the meningitis? I'm sorry you are going through this confusion. Post any questions you have and the folks on the list are always happy to help. Guest guest
Diane, Did they give you any printouts or charts or results to take home? Maybe an audiogram or a tympanogram? Also, what did you see or notice to spark the followup testing? Is she having any speech delays or did you just notice her having difficulty hearing? Pam > Im guessing the basic.. audio tests... 2 of them one indicated possible > inner ear problem then when they did the second test it says middle > ear.. but the .30db stayed the same. At the hospital her left ear showed no response and her right ear tested normal. At 10 months of age both ears tested at a severe-profound loss so it got worse. By 5 years of age her left ear tested at profound and her right ear continued at severe-profound. We had her receive a cochlear implant in her left ear and she wears a hearing aid in the right. She had been wearing hearing aids since just before turning 3. My advice to you would be to find a pediatric Ear, Nose, and Throat doctor in your area who is highly recommended. There should be some sort of Early Intervention program in place in your state which is a state funded program. If you call a local school, they should be able to give you a phone number for that program. They can help you find a good doctor and tell you what your daughter needs. They will draw up what they call an Individual Family Service Plan to start giving your daughter speech therapy and any other kind of therapy she may need. The earlier you get her involved with this the better. They can help you with hearing aids an other things that your daughter might need. The Listen-Up website is a wonderful resource and one of the best websites for parents of hearing impaired children. You'll learn a lot from it and from all the other parents on this list.
