Guest guest
My mom is diabetic. I know she has to watch her carbs and not get too many in one meal. How old is the boy? Maybe some sugar free gluten free candy, low sugar bread that's gf. If you're baking yourself, Splenda is a good substitute. I don't give my kids aspertame (nutrasweet) because it's been linked with neurological problems. Splenda may prove hazardous, too, in the long run, but until then....if the basket is for mom, too, a bunch of gf recipes if she cooks herself, or maybe some literature on how to change old recipes, some basic gf flour mixes to help do that. Rice noodles. That's just off the top of my head, thinking what I would have liked to have gotten when my son was first diagnosed. And it's been a long week, so I'm tired....vacation bible school and I'm not quite fully recooperated so it's taking it's tole. But worth it in the long run. My own son asked if he could ask Jesus into his heart.....we've decided he's a bit young, but at least he's asking questions. Guest guest
Hey SY-A family in my town just got their son dx. He is diabetic and now cd. I'd like to give them a gf basket but I'm not sure about the diabetic part. Pasta? Baked goods? (sugar free? made with applesauce?)Any ideas/guidelines would be helpful. **Whatever you decide to put in the basket - include a dry mix for them to make again or include the recipe. If CD is an issue why not GF art supplies or fresh cookie cutters? Or those toaster sleeves? Or even a humourous look at the adaptations they're facing. I bet someone has posted something on the web before. Dawne
Guest guest
The Canadian Celiac Association has a book on Celiac and Type I Diabetes: Managing Diabetes and Celiac Disease Together - 2002 Edition This handbook was designed as a guide to help people who have been diagnosed with both Type I Diabetes and Celiac Disease. It contains questions and answers about both diseases, helpful hints, meal planning and gluten-free recipes which have been assigned diabetes food choice values. You can go to their website to print out an order form: http://www.celiac.ca/eproducts.html One of our former members bought this and he felt that it was very useful. Guest guest
, My 5 yr. old daughter has Type 1 diabetes since she was 14 months old. She has been on an insulin pump since 1/05. Celiac dx was 4 months ago. I would put things in the basket that are low in carbs. Here are some things that work well for us: Energ Bread/Tapioca Loaf or Corn Loaf; Midel Arrowroot Cookies, Smartfood Popcorn (the snack bags are great for on the go and carb info. is on it) EnviroKids Cereal (it's not low in carbs but is happy to have a sugar cereal now )Tinkyasa Elbow pasta ( has 1/2 a serving which is 21.5 carbs which is fine for us and is a good serving for a 5 yr old) And fresh fruit. I hope this helps. How old is the child? A boy or girl? Having to deal w/ diabetes for about 4 yrs. Celiac has been very doable. has done great w/ the transtion. I hope the same happens for your friend. Ingrid Horn (Burke,VA)

Guest guest
Hello, My son also has both. He is 6yrs old and since he really isn't suppose to have too much sugar it is sometimes hard since he is only 6. My son loves fruit snacks. Also you could if you wanted baked some cookies using gf flours and I make peanut butter cookies (son's fave) using Splenda which cuts down on the sugar intake. My son also loves plain spaghetti noodles with the parm. cheese sprinkled on top, so now I buy the quinoa/corn spaghetti noodles. The rise noodles are not as good. If you have any other questions let me know. Darcy > Hey SY- > > A family in my town just got their son dx. He is diabetic and now > cd.
