Jim,

I was told by our clinic that ketones between 80 and 160 were ideal. Indeed,

Katera always felt awful if ketones were dark/160+ right away on the stick....

and we tried hard to keep her down below that. Are you seeing seizures? Any

reduction? Any sign of control at all? I would be alarmed at being on that high

of a ratio. 4:1 seems high to me..... but 4.5:1 is super high. Was she started

at that ratio? The body can do funny things at that point.... with so little in

the way of carbs at all with a 4.5:1 ratio. The body really does require *some*

carbohydrate.... and you may find greater resistance to ketosis if she isn't

getting it in her diet. Metabolically, she is fighting tooth and nail against

it.... calling on all reserves to supply a little essential glucose to the

brain. Further on down the road, her body will " give up the fight " so to speak

and stay in ketosis more easily. I am just really alarmed at the really high

ratios..... my personal viewpoint only. If she is normally consistent with the

ketone levels up around 130...... and now suddenly they've dropped for no

apparent reason, then yes, it *could* be due to illness coming on. Usually,

blood sugar levels will shoot up, even a couple of days in advance.... which

naturally makes the ketones drop. Something you just have to ride out. It's

easier for those of us who are testing blood glucose at home as part of the

protocol..... because you can see that jump in sugar levels.... then watch and

wait. For us, typically it was two days later...... fever and other symptoms

would finally show up. If that didn't happen, and sugar levels were still up, we

were then supposed to call the neuro's office. Could be from too many calories

or other reasons, too. Are you seeing an increase in seizures with the ketone

drop?

This article is very interesting...... not terribly long but very

informative and easy to understand. Just wanted to share.
