Guest guest
that is yeast [ ] Tongue thrusting? Hi, My daughter is just getting evaluated for Tongue Thrusting or Reverse Swallow. She sticks her tongue out when she swallows. Her manners are good except for that. Is this mercury related? The speech therapist says that there is a retraining process she can step my daughter through. Any input will be helpful. Thanks, in Salt Lake City

I don't know if it is related to metal toxicity, because none of my other kids have this problem, and they were also metal toxic. > The speech therapist says that there is a > retraining process she can step my daughter through. Any input will be helpful. I have had training from a SLP about retraining my son. I can give you info off-list if you want. Dana

We saw a presentation by an occupational therapist this week, and she went through a huge amount of information just on eating habits. Bottom line is, there's a lot they can do to retrain how she eats. Just a guess, but if your daughter has hypotonia or sensory issues, that could be the cause of this behavior. And a lot of what I've read, including Andy's book, points to mercury poisoning as a cause of hypotonia and sensory issues. -
Guest guest
From my experience as a pediatric dentist, I would tell you that tongue thrusting is NOT mercury related. If the tongue thrusting is related to an " open bite " (a space between the front teeth when the back teeth are together or " in occlusion " ), then the chances of " retraining " the tongue are minimal since the tongue has to fill in the space between the teeth to create a " seal " which is necessary to create the negative pressure required for a person to swallow. To put it simply: Try to swallow with your mouth open- it obviously does not work. So, from my experience, the " open " bite has to be " closed " orthodontically IN CONJUNCTION with tongue retraining so that during and after orthodontic treatment the tongue will not continue to be placed between the teeth which will either prevent the bite from being corrected or cause a " relapse " after the orthodontic correction. Guest guest
When I had braces, my orthodonist emphasized tongue placement in swallowing a lot (and I had braces two times, once as a young child because I sucked my thumb really bad and then in college again). Guest guest
Also hope to hear someday soon that you don't use amalgam with any patient, on the spectrum or not. Guest guest
After attending several lectures and presenting at the AutismOne Conference in Chicago this past May, I felt that the risk of mercury exposure in children on the spectrum contraindicated the use of silver amalgam as a restorative material in these patients. Guest guest
Our services are underwritten by a State of Illinois grant so we definitely accept public aid and if a patient is not covered by public aid or any other type of dental insurance, there is no charge for routinue procedures such as examinations, cleanings, fillings, and uncomplicated extractions. Guest guest
Ed Arranga and Jim Donnelly were two of the people instrumental in both starting AutismOne and putting on the Conference. These are two exceptional people and I have learned a huge amount from both of them.
