I am so sorry. I have heard the same thing about puberty. I hope they find an

answer soon for your son. Someone told me ASD kids go through puberty earlier

than NT kids. A little girl in my sons PPCD class has just started having

seizures also.

Best wishes,

Lori

Hi,

I am sorry that I cannot offer any advice. I just wanted you to know

that I am so sorry that this is happening. It must be very scary.

The only thing that I can think of is some children develop seizures

at puberty. My son is 6, and have not encountered this yet. I hope

they can find the answer fast. Please keep us updated.

My 9 year old with Autism suddenly out of the blue had 2 Grand Mal Seizures

in one week - and is now having sudden " Drop Seizures " - where he just

blacks out for a brief second or two and then falls down losing muscle

control. It happens suddenly then is over. Does anyone have a child like

this? What do you do? What seizure medicine/supplement has been helpful?

Thank you for any input or references. We are so very scared - he has a

broken collar bone - numerous goose-eggs - and is black and blue from these

falls. We are awaiting results from an EEG and have an MRI scheduled. As

usual with Autism - the doctors have offered us no clues as to what could

have suddenly brought these on...... has not been sick or changed

any supplements and is on no medicine other than Klonopin for the seizures.

Which isn't helping..... Thank you all so much for any

suggestions.........

Dear :

I'm so sorry to hear what you guys, and especially have had to go

through! It breaks my heart!

It has been several years since I looked into seizures, but I was told that

about 50% of the kids on the spectrum will either have seizure disorders or

will develop them, usually out of the blue around puberty, supposedly because

of the hormonal changes.

Chez is the EXPERT w/seizue disorders and autism. He is in Chicago

and if I remember correctly (I've had surgery and all sorts of my own hell

recently) he is speaking at the up coming T-CART conference. He uses a

product called carn-aware which I believe is from carnosine (a peptide

composed of amino acids) But as with everything else we parents deal with

there has been controversy surrounding this. I believe Jon Pangborn typed

something that was NOT in favor of using carnosine as a treatment for

seizures. SO, as with everything else you'll just have to read and make an

informed decision on what to do! I do know that If my son was still having

the seizure problems that I would do what ever it took to get him to Dr.

Chez. Dr. Amy Holmes spoke VERY highly of him! Our seizure problems (absent

seizures) have gone away over the last few years while doing the DAN!

Protocol (knock on wood) .

Another thing is I think taurine is suppose to help, I have notes on

all of this, but I would have to find them and I've just had surgery, on pain

meds, and I guess what I'm saying is that if this doesn't help and you still

need info. I WILL find what I've got on all this and send it your way, just

let me know!! And If you haven't already, I would also do archive searches on

abmd and autism treatment list.

We are praying for you guys and BIG hug to !

If you need anything just let me know! (817) 714-6817 or (817) 514-1552

So sorry to hear about 's new problems. Epilepsy/seizures occur more

often in spectrum disorders than in the general population. Common medications

used to treat seizures are Depakote, and Tegretol or Trileptal (a newer version

of Tegretol with less side effects). Other anti-convulsants include Lamictal

for refractory epilepsy (cases that are difficult to control), Neurontin, and

some older medications like Dilanton (which I am not that familiar with).

Grand Mal seizures are now called Tonic-Clonic Seizures and the " Drop Seizures "

sound like they could possibly be absence seizures or some other type of partial

seizure -- hard to tell since he does have seem to lose muscle control.

http://www.epilepsyfoundation.org/answerplace/ -- This is a pretty decent site

with info on epilepsy, including medications, ketogenic diet, vagus nerve

stimulation and surgery.

One of my 12 yr olds had several seizures (1 tonic clonic and several absence

seizures, including loss of bladder control) when he was about 6 and then it

seemed to resolve. Several EEGs revealed nothing, but the MRI did pick up a

lesion in the hippocampus. There is no way of knowing if this was the cause of

the seizures, the result of them, or inconsequential. We have done a follow-up

MRI and it has remained the same, which is considered good news.

At first the drs at the ER (after the tonic clonic) felt it was a febrile

seizure since he had an elevated temperature when he was brought in, but I have

found out that this can be normal. It was later determined that a medication he

had been on for awhile had lowered his seizure threshold. Everyone has a

seizure threshold, and some people have a higher one and others a lower one.

Different variables can trigger seizure activities in people, and those with a

low threshold will react to less stimulus.

Are you seeing a pedi neuro? If you need the name of one, let me know. We have

dealt with several at the Houston Medical Center.

There are a couple of decent books on childhood epilepsy --

Subject: [autism_and_vaccinations] FW: and UPDATE re: STOP THE PRESSES!!!

Hi Jo,

Although I completely understand and share your frustration, in my opinion,

using the title " Shame on Senator Dodd " is the equivalent of going after him.

I should have been more careful about passing it on. We cannot afford to

burn any bridges.

In my opinion, we should say what we are for, and what we are against, re:

the bill, but not target anyone in these emails. That way we make our point

without unnecessarily losing support.

So everyone, please continue sending your faxes and emails, and making your

calls.

All the best,

Sandy

We're not going after Dodd, just letting him know that yes, we're very happy

that he cares about 70% of the children but we don't want any child left

behind. I think it's great that he got so many calls, it just drives it on

We're not going after Dodd, just letting him know that yes, we're very happy

that he cares about 70% of the children but we don't want any child left

behind. I think it's great that he got so many calls, it just drives it on

home that we care so much about this issue and just want him to do the right

thing. It's important to know that their office was shaken up today and

Thank you ever so much for writing and sharing! I appreciate your

Thank you so much,

Re: For the Reader's Post please....

So sorry to hear about 's new problems. Epilepsy/seizures occur more

often in spectrum disorders than in the general population. Common

medications used to treat seizures are Depakote, and Tegretol or Trileptal

(a newer version of Tegretol with less side effects). Other

anti-convulsants include Lamictal for refractory epilepsy (cases that are

difficult to control), Neurontin, and some older medications like Dilanton

(which I am not that familiar with).

Grand Mal seizures are now called Tonic-Clonic Seizures and the " Drop

Seizures " sound like they could possibly be absence seizures or some other

type of partial seizure -- hard to tell since he does have seem to lose

muscle control.

http://www.epilepsyfoundation.org/answerplace/

<http://www.epilepsyfoundation.org/answerplace/> -- This is a pretty

decent site with info on epilepsy, including medications, ketogenic diet,

vagus nerve stimulation and surgery.

One of my 12 yr olds had several seizures (1 tonic clonic and several

absence seizures, including loss of bladder control) when he was about 6 and

then it seemed to resolve. Several EEGs revealed nothing, but the MRI did

pick up a lesion in the hippocampus. There is no way of knowing if this was

the cause of the seizures, the result of them, or inconsequential. We have

done a follow-up MRI and it has remained the same, which is considered good

news.

At first the drs at the ER (after the tonic clonic) felt it was a febrile

seizure since he had an elevated temperature when he was brought in, but I

have found out that this can be normal. It was later determined that a

medication he had been on for awhile had lowered his seizure threshold.

Everyone has a seizure threshold, and some people have a higher one and

others a lower one. Different variables can trigger seizure activities in

people, and those with a low threshold will react to less stimulus.

Are you seeing a pedi neuro? If you need the name of one, let me know. We

have dealt with several at the Houston Medical Center.

- I also am dealing with a child with seizures. We had a

series of EEG's done 9/02 and found out that Evan has complex

partial seizure, he also has a CAT today. I am new at both of these

two conditions, so I don't have much wisdom in either subject to

offer (yet) but you will be in my prayers. Christal J
