Guest guest
If anyone is interested, Gold Star EMS in South Texas ( Corpus Christi, Alice, Kingsville, Premont, and Orange Grove ) will be shutting their doors at 1700 this evening. A smaller local private service will be covering 911 for the city of Alice and the county of Jim Wells after that. My heart felt blessing and well wishes goes out to all those hard-working medics and their families now out of a job. The employees just found out at 0830 this AM. Please keep them in your prayers, and keep vigil this could happen to any of us. McGee, EMT-I Don Elbert wrote: I think enjoyed saying that. Does have enough to do? Guest guest
The City of Galveston has its own EMS agency, a separate third service just like Austin or on County. The unincorporated areas of Galveston County along with most of the other cities in the area had GoldStar. -Wes Re: Goldstar pulling out of Galveston County Who runs EMS on Galveston Island? Guest guest
The employees of Galveston EMS are Galveston County Health District employees, but the equipment including vehicles belongs to the City of Galveston. Back in the 1970's when GEMS started, it was hoped that it would catch on county wide where the cities and county would share in the cost of running EMS. This would be done by having the county do the employee/hr side, and the city help with funding including equipment. This idea did not catch on as the majority of the cities continued to use private services. A. Guest guest
: Didn't Galveston (I can't remember if it was the city or county) get grants to fund some of the trucks? I seem to remember the Moody Foundation was involved, if memory serves me correct. In 20/20 hindsight, it might have been even more beneficial if the county provided the trucks and the city the people. Then the trucks could have been placed with the local FD/VFDs to man to provide service in the county rather than what seems like an ongoing process of hiring and replacing private services. Guest guest
In the early days, up through the 1980's Moody's did provide some trucks. From what I was told when working at GEMS, some political forces got upset. The whole issue of EMS in Galveston County has been a political football. I don't want to start or be accused of flaming, so I will leave it at that. The only sad thing has been the main county government never acknowledged that it had the makings of an EMS service in house. A.
