Guest guest
Hi all, Wanted to see if any of you are home schooling. We are seriously considering it with Macie, as her seizure activity began right around starting kindergarten time (after nearly two years of complete control), and has gotten continually worse (although last week was better than most). She has been given gum by a friend on the bus on several occasions, and a little girl at school has been sharing grapes from her lunchbox. I don't think this explains all of the activity we're seeing. She is wiped out by school and the extra energy it requires, although she loves it. We have been trying 1/2 days and it is helping some, and she is napping every afternoon once she gets home. Her classroom (regular ed) has a couple of really disruptive behavior problems, and I just think the teacher is overwhelmed at times. Also, the go to breakfast, lunch, and their specials class all within 3 hours, so there's lots of lining up and walking the halls - disruption and often chaos!! The anxiety Macie feels seems to make the seizures worse. According to the skills list they sent home for the kindergarten curriculum, she is doing fine. However, they are doing many first grade type things already that aren't developmentally appropriate, and she is struggling with some of those. I've been helping one day a week in her class, and am there for a short time nearly every day. They've been assigning one of the most advanced little girls to help her with writing, etc. The worst part is many people don't realize it when Macie is having a seizure, and she's been having many at school and the teachers don't know it. While we are fine tuning, it is hard to know if the changes we are making are helping if she's not with us and we can't watch her. This is a very difficult decision for us....I guess I'm asking for advice. We know the social interaction is so very important, but I don't want to be stubborn about it if the answer is obvious. I don't want to sacrifice her health, and take any longer than we have to to figure out how we can get rid of the seizures again. I taught kindergarten for six years before Macie was born, so I have all the materials I could possibly need. Any thoughts????? Thanks, Glenna
