Depending on the age of your son, it should be pretty safe to use OTC,

topical itch-relief cremes or ointments. Cortizone is the most common, but if

you want to avoid steroids, topical Benedryl works great as well. Lanacane

makes everything feel numb, not all that pleasant. Also, using oatmeal and/or

lavender in the bath can be very soothing. Hope this is of help!

Thanks e,

We are using calamine lotion and used oral Benedryl a couple times at first when it kept him from sleeping due to itching so badly. Not to sound ignorant but how do you use the oatmeal in the bath? Do you put it in cheesecloth or something? If you stick it right into the water it sounds messy and like a drain problem waiting to happen. Just a need to know kind of question.

Thanks,

Not to sound ignorant but how do you use the oatmeal in the bath? Do you put it in cheesecloth or something?

, I guess it would depend on how full you fill the bath. If you keep it fairly low, probsbly a 1/2 cup or so would be fine. If the tub is pretty full try a full cup. And, yep, put it in a cheesecloth or something porous and let the faucet water run over it while the tub fills up. You can also use that as a washcloth to wash him with it and avoid soap for awhile, which can aggrevate and dry out skin. Glad to be of help! Aveeno has a powderized form of an oatmeal bath, but that can be a little bit pricey, plain old oatmeal is a whole lot cheaper!

Thanks Darlene,

Cam's rash is getting better. I will try the oatmeal.

I just read your beautiful poem. I still have tears in my eyes. You are first class. It is heartbreaking and heartwarming all at the same time.

Hugs,

Hey ,

You put the oatmeal into an old sock, tie off at the end and when the sock gets wet, you squeeze the sock over or in the water. There is something called "Alveno" that you can put right into the water but it can be expensive.

I have used the oatmeal bath for J.D. and it was soothing.
