Re: Constipation - Controlled through diet selections

This has not been a major problem for Macie, but it might have

something to do with our diet selections.

We use mostly strawberries, celery, cucumbers, and broccoli as

our fruit/veggies. She has lots of cream in her meal plans. She

has an eggnog shake nearly every night at bedtime (her 4th meal)

with some calculated almonds, peanuts, and sunflower seeds (she gets

about 3 grams each).

Of course, she maybe just isn't prone to constipation and our

food choices have nothing to do with it.

Most of the time we, too, try to max out our carb allowance with high

fiber fruits and veggies. Our daughter had some problems with

constipation in the beginning but has not had problems in the past

month or so. I keep mineral oil handy but only give it to her if she

has a hard stool that " hurts " -- only rarely lately.

After the first month on the diet, we got the ok to give her cooked

prunes--calculated into her meal. She doesn't get very many, but she

does love them so I give them to her about once per day. Also, we

were given the ok to use PURE psyllium seed (it IS carb, but it's

100% fiber). On the Atkins diet and the Zone you can subract fiber

from total carbs to get " actual " carbs. This is not common practice

on the keto diet, but we were allowed to experiment. I give my

daughter one teaspoon of psyllium mixed with 3 ounces of water once a

day (this is NOT calculated into her diet). I mix it and allow it to

gel. She doesn't mind the taste and eats it like pudding. Sometimes

she will have sugar free jello with it. It seems to be helping (it's

definitely not hurting) and hasn't caused any problems with the

diet. Please don't do this without asking your keto team. I'm sure

we got to try it because we have good control and it was the only

variable for two straight weeks. Also, our daughter is much more

active since starting the diet. Inactivity also predisposes one to

constipation. Our daughter is 7. You would want to use less for a

younger child. I would not recommend it for an infant or any child

who has difficulty swallowing.
