Guest guest
Personally, I'd like to see two things addressed. 1) I believe that, in order to advance as a profession, we should become self-regulated by an EMS Commission. 2) In the spirit of tort reform, specific protections against liability should be provided for clinical sites and preceptors. Lee , among others, has told too many horror stories about EMS students not getting quality clinical time because of the clinical site's fears of liability. -Wes In a message dated 6/13/2005 10:32:01 PM Central Daylight Time, paramedicop@... writes: So, now that we've got two years until the next legislative session, what are the " big ticket " items we need to focus on? I fully agree with point one but sadly having been in on some of the meetings regarding point number 2 is that in at lease many of the cases I've been in on discussions with the clinical sites they use the tort angle as a convenient excuse for other reasons BUT that said I would welcome a legislative fix for the problem. Guest guest
So, now that we've got two years until the next legislative session, what are the " big ticket " items we need to focus on? What small items could we potentially win? What concerns you, and what do you want to see changed? New laws? Changes to existing laws? ESD stuff? Provider stuff? Scope of practice stuff? Commission stuff? Mike
Guest guest
I agree with the self regulation. Doctors, lawyers, and nurses all have a self regulating board or bar and they seem to run well. Guest guest
I know nobody wants to hear about this, but how about the government working on some more funding specifically for EMS. I know that we need a unified voice in Washington, but we also need monies to operate and survive. I work for a very poor rural third service. I am fighting hard to keep my head above water just because I love what I do and I enjoy the area where I work. I know down deep inside that these poor people need help, and I want to be there for them. I don't want to be like so many other " medics " that ran out when times got tough (monetarily speaking). Which brings me back to my fight to start an ESD in my area. Mike wrote: So, now that we've got two years until the next legislative session, what are the " big ticket " items we need to focus on? Guest guest
As a matter of fact Dudley, I have. I can't speak about fire departments, or even attorneys, but for the most part the doctors and nurses I have spoken to are satisfied with the way they are regulated. I, for one, would much rather be regulated by my peers then by government officials that have little medical knowledge or idea what we do. Think about it, who would you rather have QA/QI your run reports, a fellow medic or a politician? The trades and crafts have been doing this for centuries. I know that we all want to be considered professionals. Part of being professional is overseeing the actions of our peers. We should strive to educate and promote each other, as well as correct each other when we see problems. After all, isn't that what we do here, each and every day, on this list server? We suggest, educated, share knowledge, and if needed correct each other. Why can't this be done on a grander scale? Just my $0.02. McGee, EMT-I THEDUDMAN@... wrote: Really? Talked to many Doctors, nurses or lawyers about this? How about firefighters/fire departments??? The grass ISN'T always greener!!!
