---Hi Laurie,

AHHH..Yes I remember those WONDERFUL days!!! My son did this from

about age 3 to age six. VERY frustrating and yes, gross! I guess

the way I " handled " this(if thats what you can call it) I literally

followed him and peeked into the bathroom, or wherever he hapened to

be doing this, and firmly informed him that this is NOT what we do!

Also did aLOT of cleaning up! YUCK!...and crying. I was at a loss

too, he was not on supplements like he is now, so maybe someone can

give some input on this as well.

Laurie,

Boy, those memories are not fond. Both my kids smeared, in fact my

daughter who has never been dx with anything officially did it much

worse than my son who was dx ASD.

She was 4 when she finally stopped, so my methods might be hard for

you innact. :) We would take a zip up sleeper, cut the feet/arms

off if too hot, put it on backwards and then safety pin the zipper

to the top in back.

When this was a huge issue, we had not begun supplimentation, so I

cannot advise anything from experience.

If I were you, I would treat it as a stim, and go at it from that

standpoint first. Do things like treat yeast aggressively with

probiotics, oils, and GSE. You might also try glutamine between

meals for gut healing.

If that doesnt help, my next step would be amino acids. I have heard

inositol and tryptophan mentioned for obsessive behavior. I think it

was Steve that had experience with those but im not sure.

HTH,

we went through that l " lovely " behavior when my son was around 5. It lasted

a year, and gosh, that was the worst!. After having behavior specialist here,

the best way was to have him clean it up. Which I did, and then I did it

again with the clorex. And then he use to be covered in it as well. I gave him

a

warm bath, not to comfortable, and no conversation between you and him. Just

give bath, then I would get a cup of cooler water, not ice, but just

uncomfortable cooler, and say no playing with the poo.

After a few times this kinda worked. You just don't want to " reward " with a

bath, afte they have smeared it.

Just think it is another behavior that will get replaced by something else.

Good luck, hope this helps.

Just so that you know, it is very common for our kids to do this. Don't know

why?

When my son was young he did this all the time. I used to put him in

clothes where he couldn't get his hands down his pants, like onesies or

one piece garments

There's a catalogue called either Land's End or Lane's End that makes

one piece pajamas in large sizes. We put duck tape wrapped around

the top of the pajamas twice being sure to tape the very top of the

zipper and start it and end it in the back where it is difficult for

our son to reach. In the summer we cut the feet off and shorten the

arms so he is not too hot. Use the industrial duck tape and be sure

to end it on the material rather than on the tape because it is much

harder to pull it off the pajama material.

Feces smearing is a yeast thing for my son treat the yeast and this

will go away. The yeast maybe has accumulated w/ the chelation

break. Try GSE 4-5 drops several timeas a day.

I heard an educator speak on this problem one time. Her solution was to give

the child lotion to rub and smear... in appropriate places. I'm not sure if

this works or not, but it's supposed to address sensory needs. My son used to

do this.... I

can't remember how or why he stopped, but I'm glad he did.

For someone in my local support group, adding zinc stopped this.
