After 2 1/2 years of chelation and many natural supplements I put my

son on Straterra. I did not like it at all. He was emotional and

mean and not much benefit. I then tried adderall and it has really

helped Jack. He was emotional at first but prior to it's use he was

too hard to handle and he was not communicating, now he signs to

communicate. Adderall has been a big positive in our lives. It does

not suppress his appetite any more, but it did in the beginning.

Most of the practitioners I work with or have talked to about this

(as I thought of using it with my son) have not had many good things

concerning. They said that in children who were mildly ADHD that it

worked well, but when it came to children that were more ont he

moderate to severe ADHD scale that they didn't see any

improvements. Thus, they have stopped prescribing it.

For my son, it was a disaster. It appeared to work for a couple of weeks, then

it all changed. He became worse on the med - crying, wandering, upset, angry,

violent, obstinant, etc...

If you do try it, use much less than his weight suggests. I've heard this is

more helpful for autistic children (starting smaller dosage).

Hello,

My son is 5 and was diagnose with PDD-NOS/ADHD and a psychiatrist

recommended that we put him on Strattera. We are currently going

through the DAN! protocol, which he is improving slowly, but still

exteremely hyper (especially at school). She suggests that we

medicate him or put him in special ed class. We want to keep him

mainstreamed because he is so bright. We are opposed to putting him

on meds, but I wanted to get the pros and cons and see if any of you

were using Strattera on your children and what effects it may have

had on them (good and bad). Please advise.

If you are opposed to meds, you might want to consider addressing phenol

intolerance, which is a typical cause of ADHD

We've tried all vitamins & supps--besides which we are on for chelation

purposes anyway.

B6 alone made him hyper & crabby--we do B50 broken into 3 doses, to minimize

these side effects. Magnesium did not address attention issues much, although

I think it really helps with sleep and preventing constipation.

I'm so jealous of those who have success with attention meds. We've tried them

all. Strattera held SUCH initial promise--it did so many nice things for my

son: improved attention, organizational skills (he actually started his

homework on his own!!!), improved language, more " natural " in his affect, better

handwriting.

Within 2 weeks the effects started diminishing--so we upped the dose, and per

some parents who have had good results, split the dose. Many parents feel it is

NOT effective at once daily dosing. We reached the maximum dose, and, at that

dose, he seemed even LESS attentive than before. All good, intial stuff had

disappeared by then.

What a bummer. It didn't effect his sleep or appetite, either. Now, we have

just finished 2 weeks on desoxyn, which, again, has done nothing for his

attention. His school is really working to implement a new organizational

system for him that will keep him on task as you just can never rely on these

meds to work, or continue to work well.

I would definitely try the Strattera--start low, as someone suggested, but don't

be afraid to look into 2 x daily dosing if you see the effects waning. Some

kids have done really well on it.

We plug on with chelation, hoping that it will eventually be the biggest

influence on attention and everything else.

my son's doc gave up a sample of strattera to try with our son, but

unless it is proven to be a 'cure' for autism, i don't think i could

bring myself to use a drug made by eli lilly, creators of thimerosal,

which i believe to be a HUGE part of my son developing 'autism'. it

seems to me, it's as if they are saying, " no, we do think thimerosal

causes autism (although they have know since the 40's that it causes

neurological problems), but here's a great new drug to help with some

of the symptoms of autism " . i refuse to give them a one cent of my

money to help with something they caused! just my opinion.

that said, dr. megson says she has seen some improvement in other

patients. i also know a mom who's son uses it. she hasn't mentioned

anything negative about it, but isn't sure if it is helping a great

deal. i tend to agree with dana (re: phenols).

good luck!

My daughter is like this....

Because she is ADD, we tried no-fenol, and it didn't really have any

noticable changes. Then we tried adrenal cortex, and it helped

immediately. I know she has some yeast, which I am sure is contributing

to her attention problem.... But we are chelating even though her hair

test was normal.

Does he have a favorite pass-time? I know of a child that they allowed

to knit in school to keep his hyperness in check while reading, sitting,

etc. This may help while you find the right suppliments/meds.
