Is there anyone in this group...a smoker??? Any information on

smoking and this surgery? My surgeon...like all docs wants me to

quit. This probably wouldnt be as difficult as it seems to me except

that I also have to lose 10% of my overweightedness as well. I am

less than a month pre-op and would like some feedback from any

smokers and how you dealt with it.

My surgery is June 1st.

Ladies,

Gastric Bypass was the stop-smoking aid that finally got me to quit.

(And I have been smoking since high school!)

I had my surgery on Dec. 2 2003. I quit smoking 3 months before the

surgery, and have not had a cig in the past 8 months!!

Initially there wasn't a day that went by that I did not think about

wanting a cigarette. However, after the surgery, I began to focus

more on the weight loss progress I was making and the lifestyle

changes involved. Little by little, smoking became such a non

issue. You can do this too!!! Quitting has been the biggest bonus

to the 70 lbs lost!!

Good luck to you!

I know it's tough and can certainly empathize. I quit about 15 months

before surgery (for the second real time :) ), which happened to

coincide with my research on the surgery. If obesity deaths are second

only to smoking deaths and I was considering such a drastic, but

successful (down over 30 pounds in 3 weeks) approach to my obesity then

I had to kick the smoking out of there. My husband and I made the

decision, bought the patches (which actually worked for us) and we were

done. It wasn't easy but you have to make your mind up that you need to

do this and stick with it. We're all so strong for going through this

surgery, I know we have the strength when it comes to cigarettes as

well :)! Best of luck Donna!

--hi donna..im glad i saw your post....i am 6 1/2 mos. post op and

fretted horribly over my inability to quit smoking before my

surgery.my doc wanted me to quit 3 mos. before..i didnt do it..until

3 days before..i had no ill effects from this decision and i resumed

my smoking 1 wk after surgery..i only smoked about 5-8 cigs a day

prior to the surgery and after the surgery...i have smoked a pack a

day since then..pretty much a chain smoker on my days off...im

hoping when my food amts increase at the 1 yr mark to 1 cup per

meal, that i can cut back or quit..just wanted you to have some info

from an " actual smoker " ...good luck on whatever you can handle.ps.i

spent months trying to find people who smoked before gastric...hard

to come by...so i just crossed my fingers and hoped for the

best...pam moreno- In Gastric_Bypass_Family , " Donna "
