Good for you Bob!

I'm the same way, you described it well. I don't have the feeling to eat those chewy cookies, but if they're around, boy they sure do tempt my mind because I know how good they taste.

But I'll hate myself so much after I eat it....I hope that mind thing goes away.

cookies & cravings

Someone brought in cookies. The plate sits on a filing cabinet near myoffice. Now, I'm not much tempted by cookies. I'd probably only eatone even pre-SBD, but I've been passing by that darned plate all day.If I was on phase three, I might eat one even now. (They're about thesize of a half-dollar coin.) But I'm a *half pound* away from my third(and probably final) weight goal, so I'm not giving in.In one sense this might be called a craving. Yet cookies wouldn't havecrossed my mind at all if they hadn't shown up. And while I'm sittingat this computer in another room, I have no urge to go back after acookie. Well...maybe I do a little right now because I'm thinkingabout it as I write, but the moment I focus my attention on somethingelse, there's no problem until I go back to the office and pass thatplate. So it's a psychological "craving" rather than a physical, bloodsugar induced craving. I think that's the kind of craving that's leftafter phase 1. I'm a little surprised that most junk food doesn'tappeal to me anymore after nearly 2 years on SBD, but some foods stilldo. The best strategy I know is to avoid having junk food around. That's not always possible, so I try to avoid running into it. And ifI do run into it...well...there's will power.Anyway, I'll stop now.BobReminder: The South Beach Diet is not low-carb. Nor is it low-fat. The South Beach Diet teaches you to rely on the right carbs and the right fats-the good ones - and enables you to live quite happily without the bad carbs and bad fats. Hey, in my office the " goodies " table is directly in front of my desk

(actually touches my desk).

How'd you like to sit there and look at the stuff all day long?

For me, it wasn't a problem. Mind over matter.

Chuck,

Yeah, that would be worse. I didn't have to look at the plate of

cookies except in passing. We don't get too much stuff brought in,

fortunately for me. Mostly, this " diet " is easy because I like the

food, it satisfies my hunger, and I don't crave junk. But there are

those occasional temptations. A while back, we had a discussion about

the enticing smell of food cooking, by a spouse for instance, that

isn't in this WOE. At least the cookies didn't fill the room with

cookie-aroma :-)

I am a Kindergarten / preschool teacher and I serve them a snack every day - 2x's a day. I also have to supervise breakfast and lunch. Breakfast and lunch are not so bad because most of the food is yucky - even before SBD ;) and I'm just supervising while they eat what is on their plate. However the snacks are where I had the habit of eating a few bites while they had their snack. Most of the snacks are not SBD friendly. They are mostly cracker type items. Once in a while a parent will send fruit or veggies. I have even caught myself putting a cracker into my mouth out of habit. I've had to learn to put the serving bowl on another table so I will not just sub-consciously eat one. There was once when I was actually chewing the cracker when it dawned on me that I was eating it. These are small bite size crackers like cheez-its and are very easy to toss one into your mouth without thinking when the bowl is sitting at your elbow. I've only done this 2 or 3 times but it brought to consciousness how much of an unconscious habit some eating is for me.

I've been trying to figure out how to require snacks that are only fruits or veggies ;) I have always had a no sugar policy and no "chips" but most of my parents just don't get it. And now that I've learned about over processed and refined grains - I watch my students eat junk 4 times a day and no longer wonder why children are getting more and more hyper as the years go on. I've been teaching for 21 yrs and they are more hyper over all. Used to be one or two in the class were hyper / unable to attend for a length of time but now most are.

I can hardly stand to watch my children eat at school any more - everything is prepackaged - very little real cooking is done - mostly just warm it up from something frozen or canned.

Juice is the fruit on the tray at breakfast. Once in a while they serve a fresh apple or banana. Then there is the apple pie they serve that is the entire breakfast - well with milk too. Even the French toast is pre-packaged and the children have to open the package to eat it.

Yup those are public school breakfasts and lunches by the way - our tax dollars at work !

I know that this means more work for you, but instead of having parents bring treats, have them contribute cash toward a "treats fund" and then you can go out and purchase the treats.

I just might give that a try next fall ! Though saying that fruits and veggies are the only allowed snacks might work too. Or give them an option - send fruits and veggies or money - Just pay me off and I'll leave you alone ;) LOL

We'll see - I think one teacher did this a few yrs back - only fruits and veggies were allowed.

Re: cookies & cravings

---Chewing gum while preparing meals, or packing kids lunches, is a

very good way to stop an unconsious nibble habit.

Kay, on her way out to breakfast!

how much of an unconscious habit some eating is ..........
