Guest guest
Joanne, I had lap surgery and one of my incisions opened on the same day as my surgery. It happened as I got to my room and started having the dry heaves. Serrous fluid was leaking from my abdomen where bandages had to be changed 3-4x a day. It seemed like a lot to me, even though the nurses would say it was a " moderate " amount in my chart. I asked the doctor what we should do about it. I asked about stitches or a drainage tube and he wanted it to heal on its own without assistance. He wasn't worried about it because it didn't look infected and I didn't have a high temperature. He said it would heal from the inside out on its own. I was in the hospital for 6 days before it finally healed closed. I was all ready to have hospital home care come to my house to check in on how it was doing and to help with changing the bandages, but luckily, it did close on the day I was leaving. I'm only 2 months post-op so it's hard to tell if there will be any long-term scaring. It's about an inch long, and looks like it will take a couple years before it fades. Ask that your daughter calls her doctor's office to get recommendations on how to care for the open incision. Perhaps she has done that already. I know it's scary when there is fluid leaking that originates from inside your body. I was very upset by it. Life is hard enough recovering from major surgery! Good luck...wishing you the best...
