In many systems, yes, but not in all systems. I have worked hospital based systems where we were NOT public safety. We were medical professionals, as it should be. Ever heard the old saying, " if you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you have always gotten " ? That is where EMS is now. Still trying to fit in with the badge-and-patch " public safety " crowd, and still getting paid like them... or worse. Mark my words; as long as we look like firemen, we will NEVER see our profession be paid or respected by the public as degreed medical professionals. Guest guest
If you go back to the very beginning of the program, and look at the reasons we were creatred in a reaction to the white papers, " Accidental death and disability, the forgotten disease of modern man " We were created to offset that problem, and that is public safety. I know that much has been learned since, and we do a great deal we did not do then, but we must not forget the goal. Public Safety! Guest guest
Uh all the paid privates in this area of Texas and all the fire departments ems in this area wear uniforms, not class a but unique uniforms. Re: Re: National Class A Uniform Terry, Well, thank you for reading. I use humor to poke fun at some folks who may be a little too pompous for their own good. And uniform freaks are fair game, to me. I'm with you on what we need to wear for funerals, about the only time a Class A would ever be used. Me, I'll go with a pair of starched Wranglers, a starched white shirt, my best black hat, and my best boots. I don't give a shit how they do it in New York, Louisiana, or Chicago. I'm from Texas. Guest guest
Well stated? Really? Sounds more like our friend Mr. Grady just cashed a retainer check. NAEMT should spend our money on something that makes a difference and let IAFF do the uniform song and dance. The so called class A uniform is an insult. Even Admiral Ken of mortarboard fame doesn't have that silver of a tongue. Where was he working before he caught that bus? Larry > Well stated Gene! Guest guest
Well said Larry. Larry wrote: -- " L. H. Pacchioni " wrote: " Well stated? Really? The so called class A uniform is an insult....Even Admiral Ken of mortarboard fame doesn't have that silver of a tongue. Where was he working before he caught that bus? " All I see as a 'two-fer' ad hominem attack on your part. When someone can't defend their position, they attack the man. Where is your counter argument? And it better be pretty convincing, because you have started off on the wrong foot already. IF I were to wear one of those suits, I'd be one of those that have 5 of those SOL doohickeys above the braid. I for one believe that EMS' future is as a public health service. The EMS Agenda for the Future and the National Scope of Practice are focusing toward that direction. So, I am not particularly enamored with the Public Safety image perpetuation. However, as long as the Fire Service is the predominent provider of EMS in the nation, EMS will be part of Public Safety. The image is, and will be for the foreseeable future, one that we are part of. As long as there are lights and sirens, the public perception will be 'Public Safety'. We also have to be realistic. " Show me the money " makes a lot of sense. If NAEMT can go to Congress and get EMS a more equitable share than the 4% of the Homeland First Responder funds that we are currently getting, I would care less if the spokesperson that can do it is wearing a Class A uniform, or a suit, or a set of starched scrubs, or a loincloth. When we become more of a mature profession, then we can work toward separating from where we are to where I feel we should be. Perhaps now is not the time, but we can work toward it. The Grand Canyon wasn't created overnight, and medicine has only evolved from the barbers and apprentices in the last 125 years. Being insulting is not an effort to improving the system.
