Guest guest
I've always just used water as well, since the only way we could brush Katera's teeth is to just about hog-tie her in a lying down position (takes two of us, one to hold, one to brush and hopefully not get bitten!). Our pediatric dentist said brushing is the important part.... toothpaste really doesn't matter. He said if you get all the plaque off, which you certainly should be able to do with just a brush and water, that's all that matters. We use an electric toothbrush. Katera's teeth are somewhat yellow, too.... but he says that's just the color her teeth happen to be.... all the way through.... that it's not due to not getting them clean enough. He was also very interested in my description of the keto diet and said he felt it was very unlikely she would have any cavities..... and probably very little plaque..... with a diet so low in carbohydrates. Accomplishing the dental exam was NOT EASY.... but indeed, she had no cavities. We only really thoroughly brush her teeth once a day...... I catch what I can (what she allows me to) in the morning by myself and then we do a REAL brushing before bed with both my husband and I managing her. The dentist said this approach should be just fine. If you do use a toothpaste, be sure to get one that is free of fluoride...... the type of fluoride that they put in toothpaste is NOT supposed to be swallowed.... and is poisonous! For the rest of my family, I buy a toothpaste made by JASON, called " Power Smile " . It's sweetened with stevia (carb free) and does not contain fluoride. I've never used it with Katera because it would just go down her throat and make her choke while we're brushing...... it's also got a really strong pepperminty taste that I don't think she'd like. Tom's of Maine also makes some toothpastes that are sugar-free and fluoride-free...... that brand and JASON are both found in natural food stores. Patti toothpaste What kind of toothpaste are you using? We have been brushing Abby's teeth with just water, but recently they have started to look very yellow. So, we want to try a toothpaste. She will not be able to spit any out. Thanks Abby, 21 months

Guest guest
Arm and Hammer baking soda toothpaste is supposed to be ok for the diet too, but it makes me gag. Mike handles it pretty well tho. We only brush his teeth once a day too - the dentist said it takes 24 hrs for plaque to take hold and start to do damage and if you 'move it or remove it' then it takes 24 hrs to take hold again. We let Mike 'brush' when he wants to just to move it around a little.
