Could you describe to me how an auditory Processing Disorder manifests

itself? HOw did you pinpoint that this was the situation with your child?

My son was diagnosed with ADHD...and Auditory Processing Disorder...

I really didn't think the ADHD was correct, but his Phsyc explained it to me

like this...She said since he can't process what he hears, because of the

APD he does not focous anymore..So by giving him Adderral to help him focous

and the ST for the APD they will work together...The Thearpy would not help

if he is not focousing...So from what she said the ADHD is caused by the

Auditoy Disorder..Because if he is not understanding what he is hearing, Why

focous???

<<HOw did you pinpoint that this was the situation with your child?>>

Well, Let's see..He is 9 years old and has always had trouble in school,

mostly with reading..It was getting worse as he got older..Nothing

helped...Hooked on Phonics, tutoring Nothing..He also would get " mixed up "

when asked to do more then one thing at a time..I did some reading because

the school was telling me there was nothing wrong that he was lazy and

stubron..I saw more in him...And Auditory Processing disorder fit him to a

Tee...so I had the evelaution and sure enough he has it....

If you want more details or web sites let me know....

I attended a workshop with Carol Flexer and she gave some facts and figures

on ADHD and its relation to hearing loss. In fact, when I attend an IEP for

students who have been diagnosed with ADHD or their parents feel they may

have ADHD, I always inquire about then number of ear infections the child had

at an early age. There is definately a connection. Most, nearly all the

kids with attention difficulties had several severe ear infections as small

children/babies. Carol Flexer basically said the same thing. Because of this

I tried to get the school to put a sound field system in one of the

kindergarten classes and again in a first grade class containing several of

these children, but the grant was never written by the committe. Maybe this

year it will get done. I would be curious to see if the sound field made a

difference in these children's lives.
