Guest guest
Hi Debs, Take advantage of that flexibility if you can. I was banded with elastics for one week, by week 2 I was allowed to take them off to eat and clean (eat soft mush - no chewing). I wore the elastics for 6 weeks - it was supposed to be 8, but one of the surgical posts came apart and my surgeon said it was ok to stop wearing them. Hoooray! I never had a splint, although my surgeon said that if he did an upper segmentation (palate expansion) I would have it in for 6 weeks or so. He did make a surgical splint, or wafer as it is also called, and it was used to line things up during the surgery, he then tossed it out. Ask Cammie about the splint, she had one wired in for 7? weeks (wired to the upper braces). Not fun. Think Thylvester the Cat. But it's only temporary. I do have a removeable upper wire retainer now, and I lisp with it at times. You learn what things make you lisp more than others pretty quickly! If you can work off e-mail instead of the telephone, all the better post-op. Keep that white board handy too. Good luck with your planning!
